Final Results
The Northern Sun dual season opened tonight as the #6 Peacocks welcomed the Marauders of U-Mary to Fayette. Behind five falls, Upper Iowa kicked off their NSIC schedule with a decisive 36-9 victory over their visitors. With the win, UIU improves their dual record to 5-2 on the 2012-13 campaign.
In the first match of the night,
Chris Paulus took on Jordan Eckholm. With the bout tied 3-3 late in the third period, Paulus pulled a reversal to take a 5-3 advantage. The redshirt sophomore then earned a point thanks to riding time on the way to a 6-3 triumph.
Trevor Franklin (#2 NCAA) then squared off with Hunter Menendez. After an early takedown and a pair of three-point nearfalls, Franklin opened the second period with an escape before pinning Menendez at the 3:49 mark.
Trailing 9-0, U-Mary rallied at 141 and 149 points pulling within three, 9-6. At 141 pounds,
Matt Paulus dropped a 10-5 decision to Trevor Johnson (#2 NCAA). Paulus was able to score a takedown in the first period.
Jordan Rinken and Landon Della Silva went to the third period of the 149-pound match tied 4-4, but Della Silva controlled the period to win 10-4.
Bryce Lumzy was then able to end the rally by recording Upper Iowa’s second pin of the night. He defeated Collin Engelhardt with just five seconds remaining in the second period. The fall marks his team-leading 15th pin of the season.
Wade Gobin (#4 NCAA) started slow in the 165-pound bout, but recorded a takedown and three near fall points to take an 8-4 lead at the end of the second period. The Canon Falls, Minnesota native maintained his edge in the third period to earn a 10-6 success over Brock Krumm.
In the 174 pound contest,
Blake Sorensen (#8 NCAA) dominated from the whistle. Sorensen scored an early takedown to go with three near fall points turning it into a pin of Riley Nagel at the 2:39 mark.
At 184 pounds,
Brock Gobin made his first career start at home. Gobin battled a veteran Brady Anderson but came up empty in a 6-0 defeat. After the match, Upper Iowa led 24-9.
In the Peacocks’ most impressive showing of the night,
Carl Broghammer (#1 NCAA) pinned Kriss McCleary in just 2:06. The Manchester, Iowa native recorded his 14th pin of the season and 22nd bonus point victory while improving to 29-2.
The final match of the night paired
Jeremy Brazil against Levi Roemich. Brazil made it five pins for the Peacocks with a fall 2:42 into the match. Brazil scored a takedown and quick nearfall points that he converted into the win by fall.
UIU will be back in Dorman this coming Sunday to take on the Beavers of Minot State bringing Stormin’ Dorman week to a close. As part of the 2 p.m. dual, Upper Iowa will be celebrating a Wounded Warrior/Military Appreciation Day. All active and former military personnel with a military ID and their families will free admission to the dual.
