Southwest Minnesota State 5 - Upper Iowa 1 || UIU 5 SMSU 1

Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

Upper Iowa and Soutwest Minnesota State University split a pair of NSIC games Saturday afternoon in Fayette.  Both wins came by 5-1 scores as the Mustangs won game one and the Peacocks claimed the second match up.  A timely hit by freshman Tara Duran gave the Peacocks a three-run lead that senior pitcher Kylee Knop would not surrender.  With the split, UIU moves to 14-27 overall and 6-8 in the conference.

Game One Recap

The Mustangs wasted little time with a two-run homerun to left center by Ashley Gigax taking a 2-0 lead out of the top half of the opening inning.  The SMSU shortstop added an rbi-single in the second scoring Sam Goblirsch.

Upper Iowa put a run on the board in the third after Rachael Anello opened the inning with a triple down the line in right.  Tara Duran drove the run in with a fielder’s choice grounder to cut the margin to 3-1.

Southwest Minnesota State tacked two more runs on to their lead in the fourth on an rbi-single to Gigax, her fourth run batted in on the day, and an rbi-double off the bat of Krista Steen.  The runs were the final marks on the scoreboard as both teams went scoreless over the final three innings.

UIU did threaten with a walk and two singles to load the bases in the seventh, but came up empty.

Chelsey Evans improved to 9-4 on the year for SMSU and Rachel Groff earned her first save.

Brooklyn Koranda took the loss after lasting only an inning and a third.  Jenna Hermsen threw well for UIU in relief going 5.2 innings and allowing two runs on seven hits.  Haning and Knop each tallied two hits for UIU.

Game Two Recap

Knop started game two and gave herself a 1-0 lead with an rbi-single down the right field line.  The single allowed Whitney Williams, who walked to lead off the inning, to come home.

The Mustangs tied the game in the top of the second as Amy Dreesen opened the inning with a solo blast to right field.

Knop led off the fourth inning and doubled to the foul pole in right.  After a pair of walks around a strikeout, UIU had the bases loaded with one out.  Second baseman Tara Duran delivered a bases-clearing double to centerfield that put the Peacocks up 4-1 heading to the fifth inning.

An error on a ground ball in the sixth allowed the Peacocks to place one last mark on their side of the ledger and put them ahead by four, 5-1.

Knop earned the victory (8-13) with a complete game allowing just one run on five hits while striking out three.

The Peacocks will head to Wayne State College next Wednesday for a double header with the Wildcats beginning at 1 p.m.
