The #11 Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato swept the Peacock softball team today in Fayette. The Peacocks dropped a 7-4 decision in game one after getting the winning run to the plate with two outs in the seventh. In game two, MSU’s offense proved to be too much as the visitors won the second game 12-4. After the two losses, UIU falls to 13-26 on the season and 5-7 in the NSIC.
Game One Recap
The Mavericks powered their way to a 5-0 lead after two and a half innings thanks to a pair of homeruns to left centerfield. Chelsea Riordan hit a three-run shot in the second inning and Chelsea Erickson followed with a two-run homer in the third.
The Peacocks got a three-run blast of their own off the bat of
Hailley Haning in the bottom of the third. A single by Missy Olson and a walk by
Katie Mnichowicz provided the runners for Haning to drive in.
Minnesota State’s Lauryn Morris plated a teammate in the fourth inning with a double to the fence in right field pushing the visitor’s lead to 6-3. The lead grew to four, 7-3, as MSU scored a run in the top of the seventh when Lindsey Erickson singled to drive in the final Maverick run.
The Peacocks made it interesting in their final at bat loading the bases with no outs thanks to singles by Olson, Whintey Williams and Mncihowicz. The Mavericks recorded the first out at the plate on a force out.
Kylee Knop flew out to right field driving in one run, but UIU was left with just one out to work with. A walk to
Bailee Haberman reloaded the bases and but a ground out ended the threat, the inning and the game.
Kendra Huettl improved to 14-3 with the win, while Courtney McKelvogue earned her third save of the year.
Jenna Hermsen (0-9) suffered the loss.
Game Two Recap
Minnesota State opened the second game’s scoring in the second inning thanks to a walk, rbi-double and a run-scoring single to post a 2-0 lead.
Lindsey Erickson hit a no-doubter to right center in the third inning with a runner on and then MSU added three more runs extending their lead to 7-0 after two and a half innings.
Haning drove in her fourth run of the day for Upper Iowa with a triple to straight away center; the run cut the deficit to six, 7-1, in the third inning.
The Mavericks reestablished their seven-run advantage, 8-1, in the fourth with a run after a leadoff triple from Melanie Upchurch and rbi-single from Amanda Umhoefer. After the Mavericks loaded the bases in the fifth, a sac fly added a run to their total, but Upper Iowa got out of the inning without further damage.
Trailing 9-1, Upper Iowa used a walk, a Maverick fielding error and a single to load the bases with one out in the fifth. The Peacocks pushed three runs across the plate thanks to a Knop single and a two-run single off the bat of Haberman and cut the gap to five, 9-4.
MSU’s offense stayed aggressive scoring two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh moving out to a 12-4 lead.
Haning, Knop and Haberman each had two hits at the plate for UIU in game two. Knop took the loss after throwing three innings and allowing eight runs, six of which were earned, on seven hits while striking out three batters.
Upper Iowa will close out their home stand tomorrow afternoon, Apr. 7, with a NSIC double header against the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University. The first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
