UIU vs. Missouri Southern State Box Score
Upper Iowa completed their play at the 2012 Teri Mathis-Zenner Memorial Tournament in Joplin, Missouri on Sunday with a split to finish 3-1 on the weekend. The Peacocks lost to the Jennies of Central Missouri in the first game, 3-2, but got a win, 3-2, against the host Lions of Missouri Southern State to improve to 7-8 on the year.
Both teams put a run on the scoreboard in the opening inning of UIU's first game. The Jennies put together three hits and scored with two outs, while the Peacocks run came on a sac bunt by
Hailley Haning.
Katie Mnichowicz, who walked with one out to reach base, scored on the bunt play.
Central Missouri broke the tie with a run in the top of the sixth thanks to back-to-back hits and then added an insurance run in the top of the seventh thanks to a pair of Peacock fielding errors.
Upper Iowa put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh.
Kylee Knop picked up an rbi on a sac fly to the catcher in foul territory, but the final out was recorded on a grounder to short and the Peacocks came up one run shy.
Knop threw a complete game allowing three runs, two of which were earned, in her seven innings of work. She gave up seven hits and one walk.
Bailee Haberman continued to see the ball well adding two more hits at the plate. Six other Peacocks tallied a hit in the game.
Upper Iowa fell behind early against the Lions of Missouri Southern State in their game of the weekend.
The Lions put a run on the board in each of the first two innings as the control issues plagued UIU's pitcher. The Peacocks turned to
Brooklyn Koranda in relief and the sophomore held the home team off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.
As Koranda and the defense kept putting goose eggs on the board, the Peacock offense scored all the runs they needed in the fourth inning.
Singles by Haberman, Mnichowicz and Haning loaded the bases for UIU with one out. Erin Van Praag stepped to the plate and hit a grounder to second, but the Lion defender was unable to make the play and made an error that allowed all three baserunners to score. The play gave Upper Iowa a 3-2 lead.
Koranda earned the win after throwing 5.1 innings and allowing no runs and just one hit while walking one and striking out one.
Haberman got two hits at the plate marking the fourth time over the weekend the junior outfielder had tallied multiple hits in a game. Haning also reached twice thanks to hits.
Upper Iowa will play double headers on three consecutive days before returning to Fayette. The Peacocks will play at Missouri-St. Louis on Tuesday and Maryville in St. Louis on Wednesday before heading east over the Mississippi River to face Quincy on Thursday.
