The Peacock softball team split a pair of road games in the NSIC on Sunday as they visited the University of Minnesota, Crookston. Upper Iowa lost a close 3-2 decision in game one before scoring the final seven runs of game two to win 11-6. With the split, UIU's record moves to 10-19 overall and 2-2 in the NSIC.
Game One Recap
The Golden Eagles were first on the board in the bottom of the third thanks to a two-run homer to right field.
A
Whitney Williams double with two on and two out in the top of the fifth scored one Peacock, but UIU was unable to push any more runners across the plate.
The two-run lead was reestablished in the next half inning after a pair of singles sandwiched a hit batsman and a sac bunt.
Trailing 3-1 in their final chance at the plate,
Jenna Hermsen homered with one out to cut the gap in half, but no other Peacock reached base.
Kylee Knop suffered her second straight one-run loss throwing six innings and allowing the three runs on four hits while striking out eight batters.
Hermsen was the only Peacock to record two hits in the game.
Game Two Recap
Both teams lit up the scoreboard in the third inning. UIU opened with four runs in their half of the inning on three hits and one Golden Eagle error. Williams earned the first rbi and
Bailee Haberman picked up the second. Knop singled to left to force a Peacock home and
Erin Van Praag picked up the final rbi with a double.
UMC stormed back in their half of the inning with six runs on five hits highlighted by three doubles and a triple.
The Peacocks continued their strong hitting at the plate in the fourth retaking their lead thanks to three runs on three hits. The first run came home on an error in the field, while Williams earned her third rbi of the day and a double steal allowed
Katie Mnichowicz to take home.
Upper Iowa added two more in the fifth on rbi's by
Hailley Haning and
Trisha Hagensick and could have had more, but UIU left the bases loaded. UIU took a 9-6 lead into the final inning.
Haning led off the seventh with a home run and the final run of the game scored as the UMC defense turned a double play.
Brooklyn Koranda earned the win in relief throwing 4.1 innings and scattering three hits while not allowing a run to score and striking out four batters.
Four Peacocks racked up two hits including Mnichowicz, Knop, Van Praag, Haning and Hagensick, while Williams drove three runs across the plate.
Upper Iowa returns home to open a 12-game homestand this Wednesday, Mar. 28. The Peacocks will host the Golden Bears of Concordia University, St. Paul in a double header beginning at 2:00 p.m. in Fayette.
