Upper Iowa opened their Northern Sun Conference season with a split at the Minnesota State University Moorhead on Saturday. The Peacocks dropped a tight 1-0 decision in game one before scoring seven runs over the final two innings of game two to run away with an 11-3 victory.
Bailee Haberman earned the victory in game two, while
Kylee Knop took the hard-luck loss in game one. With the split, UIU’s record moves to 9-18 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC.
Game One Recap
Upper Iowa threatened to put runs on the board in the first inning with runners on second and third with just one out, but the Peacocks failed to cross the plate.
The Dragons put the only run of the game on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. MSU Moorhead led the inning off with a walk and then scored when the next batter tripled.
The Peacocks had one final opportunity with a runner on third in the seventh inning with one out, but the runner was caught at home on a fielder’s choice.
Knop threw six innings and allowed just one run on eight hits while striking out four. At the plate, UIU had six hits with Missy Olson and
Katie Mnichowicz accounting for two each.
Game Two Recap
The Peacocks wasted little time getting on the board with a run in the first as
Hailley Haning singled in Mnichowicz, who had singled to open the game. Upper Iowa tacked another run on in the top of the third as Haberman doubled to center plating Olson with two outs.
The home team was able to tie the game with a pair of runs thanks to a pair of hits and a Peacock error that began the bottom of the third.
Upper Iowa broke the tie in the fifth fueled by a Mnichowicz rbi-double and a sacrifice fly by Haberman. The Dragons answered with one run in the bottom of the inning, but it would be their last run of the game as UIU’s offense gave the team a comfortable margin over the final two innings.
Rachael Anello singled to right field to drive in two runs in the sixth inning and give Upper Iowa a 6-3 lead heading into the final inning. In the seventh, the Peacocks bats put together five runs on six hits. Haning picked up an rbi-single, Knop doubled in two runners,
Whitney Williams hit a run-scoring double and Mnichowicz singled in the final run of the inning.
Haberman earned the victory with four innings of work; she allowed two runs on four hits while striking out two.
Jenna Hermsen earned a save with three innings of relief; the freshman allowed one run on four hits while striking out three.
Mnichowicz completed her big day with four more hits in the second game. Haberman, Haning and Knop all tallied two hits apiece.
Upper Iowa will head east to Crookston, Minnesota on Sunday for a double header with the Golden Eagles of the University of Minnesota, Crookston. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 1 p.m.
