Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

The Peacock softball team dropped a pair of one-run decisions to the Flyers of Lewis University this afternoon in Romeoville, Illinois.  Lewis claimed the first game in extra innings thanks to three straight single with two outs in the eighth for a 3-2 win and then held on for a 3-2 victory in game two.  The two losses drop Upper Iowa’s record to 8-17 on the season.

Game One Recap

The Flyers notched a run in the top of the first inning when a leadoff walk came around to score thanks to a stole n base, a sacrifice bunt and a single.

Upper Iowa fought back in the top of the second with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. Hailley Haning reached on a fielding error and moved to second on a sac bunt by Rachael Anello. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Erin Van Praag doubled to plate Haning and tie the game. Van Praag also advanced on a wild pitch and then scored on a Missy Olson single.

The lead held until the fifth inning when the Flyers used a pair of singles to tie the game at 2-2.

After moving to extra innings, Lewis ended the game in the bottom of the eighth and claimed the 3-2 win. Upper Iowa recorded two outs to open the inning, but three straight singles spelled disaster for UIU as the Flyers crossed with the game winner.

Van Praag led the Peacocks at the plate with two of the team’s six hits, while Kylee Knop pitched well, but took the loss falling to 5-8 on the year. Knop threw 7.2 innings allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out one batter.

Game Two Recap

After neither team scored over the first three innings, Upper Iowa threatened in the top of the fourth.  The Peacocks loaded the bases with one out highlighted by a Haning double to right.  Unfortunately, Lewis recorded the second out on a force out at the plate and the final out on a strike out.  The home team was first to mark the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning.  The Flyers put three runs up thanks to four hits.

The Peacocks rallied for a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Van Praag that plated Knop, who had singled to center to open the inning.  Upper Iowa put another run on the board in the seventh but fell just shy of tying the contest.  Olson opened the inning with a single, and after a Jenna Hermsen-double, the Peacocks had two runners in scoring position with no outs.  Following a strikeout, Bailee Haberman drove in Olson with a sacrifice fly and Hermsen advanced to third.  With the tying run just one base away, the game ended on a ground out to the Flyer shortstop.

Haberman took the loss for UIU after four innings of work.  She allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out one batter.  Hermsen threw well in relief allowing no runs and just two hits over her two innings.

The Peacocks tallied five hits in the second game as Katie Mnichowicz, Knop, Haning, Olson and Hermsen all collected one apiece.

The Peacocks will travel to face the Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead on Saturday, Mar. 24, at 1 p.m. before taking on the Golden Eagles of the University of Minnesota, Crookston on Sunday, Mar. 25, at 1 p.m. The games will open the team’s NSIC schedule.
