The Peacock softball team opened their home schedule this afternoon in Fayette against the Cougars of the University of Sioux Falls. Upper Iowa split the double header to snap their six-game losing streak and move their record to 8-15 on the year.
Upper Iowa trailed 1-0 after the first half inning of game one, but
Rachael Anello vaulted the home team into the lead, 3-1, thanks to a three-run homer over the fence in left center.
The Cougars pulled even in the third with a pair of runs, but could have done more damage as starter
Kylee Knop worked out of a bases loaded jam with help from her defense.
in the fourth the Peacocks answered with two of their own to reestablish their lead, 5-3. The runs came on back-to-back extra base hits with two outs; a
Tara Duran double and a
Whitney Williams triple.
After holding the Cougars scoreless in the top of the fifth, the Peacocks lit up the scoreboard with 6 runs in the bottom of the inning to end the game, 11-3, due to the run-rule. In the Peacocks' big inning, the team racked up 6 hits including a triple by
Bailee Haberman, a run-scoring single by
Hailley Haning, an rbi-double from
Katie Mnichowicz, an rbi-single by
Erin Van Praag, a two-run single for Williams and a second hit from Haberman in the inning, an rbi-single that ended the contest.
Knop improved to 5-7 on the season throwing 5 innings and allowing three runs on six hits while striking out three. Haberman, Haning, Van Praag and Williams all recorded multiple hits in the game.
The Cougars jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game two. USF took advantage of 3 hits, 3 walks, a hit batsmen and a Peacock error. The runs chased UIU's starter
Brooklyn Koranda.
Sioux Falls added 10 more runs in the third to take a commanding 15-0 lead. The second slew of runs were fueled by 7 hits and three more UIU errors.
Upper Iowa posted their lone run of the contest in the fourth when Haning knocked one over the wall in left center.
Koranda suffered the loss to fall to 3-3 on the season. At the plate, the team only managed three hits inlcuding two by Haberman.
The Peacocks will hit the road next week for three double headers. Upper Iowa will open the week in Romeoville, Ill. against the Flyers of Lewis University on Wednesday, Mar. 21. UIU will then begin their Northern Sun Conference season with match ups against the Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead on Saturday, Mar. 24, and the Golden Eagles of the University of Minnesota, Crookston on Sunday, Mar. 25.
