Brackets for Upper Iowa Auggie-Brute Open

Upper Iowa, the #7 wrestling team in the country, continued their early season success at a third straight open tournament this past Saturday.  The Peacocks won the title in six gold bracket (upperclassmen) brackets including a shared title between two UIU wrestlers at 165 pounds and added a title in the silver brackets (freshman) as well.  UIU placed sixteen of the twenty-five wrestlers that attended the tournament.
 
Mitch Funk (125), Matt Paulus (141), Jordan Rinken (149), Bryce Lumzy (157) and Carl Broghammer (197) all claimed individual titles in the gold brackets while Wade Gobin and Colbey Vance shared the title at 165 pounds after both winning their semifinal matches.  Dalton Westerlund earned the lone silver bracket title at 174 pounds.
 
For Broghammer, the title was his third straight open title and the redshirt junior as dominant winning all three matches by fall; he is now 10-0 on the season.  Lumzy, Rinken and Vance all won their second straight open title, while Gobin, Funk, Paulus and Westerlund all earned their first title of the season.
 
Upper Iowa placed an additional eight wrestlers over the two sets of brackets.  Three grapplers claimed third place in their weights including Logan Hopp (Gold 285) and Josh Tyler (Silver 149).  Both freshmen finished with 3-1 records. Five Peaocks placed fifth and only suffered one loss on the day; they were Blake Sorensen (G 174, 2-1), Noah Minikus (G 184, 3-1), Jeremy Brazil (G 285, 2-1), Travis Jensen (S 149, 3-1) and Taylor Reicks (S157, 3-1).  Duane Richardson was the final Upper Iowa wrestler to place finishing sixth in the 141 pound gold bracket.

Upper Iowa will take a short break from the open tournament scene in a week and a half when they face the Warriros of Waldorf College in Dorman Gym for the only dual on UIU’s schedule prior to 2013.  The dual is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Nov. 27.
