UIU Volleyball Splits on Second Day of Ferris State Invitational

The Upper Iowa volleyball team wrapped up their run at the Ferris State Invitational today in Big Rapids, Mich. with a loss to Southern Indiana, but battled back to finish the weekend 3-1 with a four set victory over UW-Parkside.

In the loss to USI, the Peacocks were swept in three sets (25-14, 25-20, 26-24).  The offense was led by Sara Vance, who registered 14 kills, and Nicky Brown, who knocked down 7.  Hailey Brown set up the attack with 25 assists while Kristy Hinrichs and Danielle Gernes both had 11 digs.  At the net, Kayla Wagner and Hailey Brown teamed up for 10 blocks.

The Peacocks only hit .105 for the match with their best set coming last; the team hit .150 in the final set.

Upper Iowa rallied to preserve a split for the day against the Rangers of UW-Parkside.  The teams split the first two sets, but UIU took care of business in the third and fourth sets for the victory (25-9, 23-25, 25-18, 26-24).

The team was led by Nicky Brown's 19 kills.  Vance added 12 and Wagner chipped in 9 from the middle.  Hailey Brown recorded 29 assists in the match.  Digs were spread among all the players, but Nicky Brown had 9 digs, while Gernes added 8.  Both Maryn Fulton and Vance registered 4 blocks.

UIU improved their hitting to .243 in the second match thanks to a hot start; the Peacocks hit .500 in the opening set.

Upper Iowa (3-1) will be at home next Tuesday night, Sept. 6, to face off against future NSIC-foe Sioux Falls.  The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Dorman Gym in Fayette.
