The Peacock football team improved to 2-1 this afternoon in Fayette, Iowa and won their Homecoming Game over Minnesota State University Moorhead by a 45-31 count. With the victory, Upper Iowa improves to 1-1 in the NSIC.
Upper Iowa exploded for 21 points in the first quarter including a
Tony Leggett 26-yard fumble return for a touchdown on the game’s first play from scrimmage. The score foreshadowed a big day not only for Leggett (12 tackles, 3 solo, .5 for loss, 2 fumble recoveries), but for the Peacocks on the scoreboard as well.
The Peacock offense amassed 551 yards of total offense including 298 yards on the ground. Freshman
Chris Smith had a second straight 100-yard rushing game. Smith accounted for 158 yards and a pair of long touchdown runs on just 14 carries for an 11.3 yard average.
Jordan Otdoerfer ran for 80 yards.
Redshirt freshman quarterback
Cole Jaeschke continues to impress. The UIU signal caller completed 12 of 18 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns to
Jessie Hubbard on skinny posts.
Drew Kaluzny added a 44-yard touchdown pass on an end-around finding
Shay Gutman all alone on the trick play.
Gutman led the receivers with 95 yards, while Hubbard added 88 and Kaluzny grabbed a pair of catches for 26 yards.
Steven Sandoval remained perfect on the season with his sixth field goal (22 yards) and six extra points.
The defense ran through Leggett, but
Tom Nesvik added 10 tackles and
Ethan Douglas registered 9 including a sack for a six-yard loss.
The Peacocks took a 28-17 lead into the break thanks to an 11-play, 86-yard drive that was capped off by Smith’s first long touchdown run (32 yards). The score came on fourth down as the clock showed 27 seconds to play. Upper Iowa put the game away in the third quarter with a pair of scores, while the defense put a goose egg on the board to push the home lead to 42-17 with one quarter to play.
Next up for the Peacocks will be the Warriors of Winona State. Upper Iowa will travel to Winona, Minn. for the 4:30 kickoff next Saturday, Sept. 24.
