The Upper Iowa softball team opened the final weekend of play Friday afternoon when they visited Junction Avenue Field in Duluth, Minn. to take on the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth. The Bulldogs won the first half of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader 8-0, before completing the sweep of UIU in game two, 3-1.
Game one was dominated by the Bulldogs as they racked up eight runs on 15 hits to take the game, 8-0 in six innings.
Upper Iowa's offense took the lead in the first at bat of the game when Adrienna Olson homered to right center field, giving UIU a 1-0 lead. But the Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom half of the inning and eventually took the lead in the fifth inning when they scored a pair of runs to take the game, 3-1.
Senior shortstop Erin Bennek notched the only other hit for the visitors in the game as UMD outhit the Peacocks, 7-2. Brooklyn Koranda took the loss after scattering seven hits in six innings of work and striking out three.
Tomorrow afternoon's doubleheader at Bemidji State is the season finale for Upper Iowa. The first pitch of the twin bill is slated for 12 p.m.
