The Upper Iowa softball team continued their eight-game home stretch Wednesday afternoon by welcoming the #10-ranked Vikings of Augustana College to the Eischeid Softball Complex in Fayette on Senior Day. The Vikings wasted little time taking control of game one of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader, winning 10-1, before taking the second game by a 3-1 decision.
Augustana got on the board first in game one by posting a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. UIU chopped the margin in half in the bottom of the inning when Hannah Jones scored on a throwing error by the Viking shortstop to make the score 2-1.
UIU’s offense when quiet for the remainder of the contest as Augustana posted a run in the fourth, four in the fifth and three more in the seventh to take the contest, 10-1.
Designated player Ashley Brown went two-for-three at the plate in game one while the visitors outhit UIU, 12-5.
In between games, Peacock seniors, Jones, Erin Bennek, Chelsey Sechrest and Erica Maisto were honored by their teammates, family and friends for their loyal service to the UIU softball team.
The first four innings of game two were a complete pitchers’ duel as a total of four hits were compiled between the two squads. Upper Iowa looked poised to upset the highly-ranked Vikings when Jones smashed a pitch over the right field fence in the bottom of the fourth, plating the first run of the ballgame, and giving UIU a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately, Augustana scored two runs in the fifth and added a third run in the sixth inning to sweep Upper Iowa with a 3-1 win.
Freshman hurler Brooklyn Koranda took the loss by tossing a complete game nine-hitter. The Maquoketa, Iowa-native struck out two batters while allowing no walks.
Jones and a pair of Erin’s, Bennek and Van Praag, recorded UIU’s three hits.
The Peacocks will return to Eischeid Complex tomorrow afternoon to close out the home portion of the 2011 season when the Wildcats of Wayne State visit Fayette. The first pitch of the previously postponed NSIC doubleheader is slated for 11 a.m.
