The Peacock softball team hosted the Marauders of the University of Mary in a Northern Sun Conference double header this afternoon at the Eischeid Complex in Fayette. U-Mary defeated Upper Iowa in the first game of the day, 11-2, after putting three runs on the board in the fifth, four in the sixth and three more in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie. In the second game, the Marauders broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth with a nine-run inning to sweep today’s action.

After U-Mary scored a run on a solo blast in the first, the Peacocks evened the game in the first when Erin Bennek doubled over the head of the center fielder and scored on Hannah Jones’ single up the middle.

The Marauders broke the tie in the fifth with three runs on three hits and two Peacock errors. U-Mary continued to pour it on in the sixth and seventh pushing out to an 11-1 lead heading into UIU’s final at bat.

The home team put one final run on the board in the seventh as Ashley Brown singled and came home on a Laura Tackenberg rbi-double.

Sarah Dec (2-12) took the loss after throwing five innings and allowing five runs, only two were earned, on eight hits, while Emily Brunskill earned the win (6-4) scattering six hits over seven innings and allowing just two Peacock runs.

In game two, U-Mary scored a run in the first and one more in the third to take an early 2-0 lead, but Upper Iowa tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Bennek singled in a run and Jones followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at two.

The Marauders erupted in the sixth for nine runs on eight hits and one Peacock error. The inning was highlighted by two doubles and two homeruns.

Brooklyn Koranda (1-18) took the loss in the run-shortened game (6 Innings) after throwing 5.2 innings and allowing seven runs, six earned, on eight hits. Emily Sinclair (9-5) got the win with 1.2 innings of work in relief of Ashley Watson.

The Peacocks will return to Eischeid Complex tomorrow for a double header with the Wolves of Northern State. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
