The #11 Peacocks entertained a full Dorman Gym as they welcomed the Marauders of the University of Mary in both teams' Northern Sun Conference opener. Mitch Schultz and Zach Rosol came up big for the Peacocks earning wins by fall, while four other UIU matmen scored major decisions. Upper Iowa evened their overall dual record at 2-2 while moving to 1-0 early in the conference season.
Trevor Franklin (125, #3 NCAA) scored a takedown in each of the three periods and added two nearfall points to claim a controlled and dominant major decision, 10-2. The Peacock sophomore claimed a ride time advantage of 2:49 over his opponenet, Matt Garcia.
Kyle Pedretti (#1 NCAA) followed with a major decision, 16-4, of his own at 133 pounds. The junior from Monona, Iowa claimed six takedowns in the match and added two nearfall points and a ride time point (3:45) to give Upper Iowa an early 8-0 lead on the scoreboard.
Neither Franklin or Pedretti surrendered a takedown in their match.
U-Mary got on the board with a 7-4 decision at 141 pounds as Tanner Beaman defeated J.R. Baker. Baker scored the first point in the match with an escape to open the second period and added another escape after a Beaman takedown to enter the final period tied at 2-2. Beaman scored a reversal and a takedown around a Baker escape to claim the 7-4 win.
Freshman Trevor Duke scored the first points in the 149 pound match against Landon DellaSilva with a first period takedown, but the Marauder grappler carried a 4-2 lead into the final period. Duke chose down to open the period and earned an escape and followed it with a takedown to take a 5-4 lead. DellaSilva didn't let his lead go for long as he scored a reversal and two nearfall points. Both wrestlers scored a reversal during a wild flurry as the final period wound down, but in the end Duke fell in his first varsity action by an 11-7 decision. After the second straight Maraduer decision the visitors closed the gap to 8-6.
Winston Robbins (157) posted an early takedown and added three nearfall points to take the early control in his match with Brandon DeLao and held a 6-1 lead heading into the final period. Robbins survived several stall warnings to score a pair of takedowns and two near fall points to win by major decision, 13-4.
Bryce Lumzy toed the line against Taylor Nagel in the 165 pound match with UIU leading 12-6 midway through the dual. Lumzy won a tough decision, 3-0, with a reversal in the final period and a ride time point (1:42).
Wade Gobin (174) took control of his match with Kurt Wiedrich in the first period thanks to a pair of takedowns and three nearfall points. The sophomore scored another takedown in the final period and added a ride time advatage of 1:58 to claim an 11-5 win and give the home team an 18-6 lead on the scoreboard.
Mitch Schultz gave the home crowd a chance to get on their feet with an early throw that he worked into a cradle. Schultz converted the cradle into a pin after quite a fight at the 1:33 mark of the first period over Brady Anderson (#6 NCAA). The Postville, Iowa native earned his third win by fall of the year.
Carl Broghammer (#6 NCAA) overwhelmed Kriss McCleary in the 197 pound match. The Peacock freshman earned a pair of takedowns in each of the first two periods and added a couple penalty points and an escape to lead 7-0 heading into the final period. Broghammer scored three more takedowns in the final period and accumulated 4:41 in ride time to claim the 14-1 major decision and give the Peacocks a 28-6 lead.
In the duals final match, Zach Rosol took an early 4-2 lead with a pair of first period takedowns. Rosol's first takedown got a rise out of the crowd as he lifted his opponent off the ground and drove him to the mat for the points. Austin Woo climbed back within one, 4-3, with a second period escape, but Rosol got a takedown near the edge of the mat and after a restart converted it into a pin (4:53) in the final ten seconds of the second period. The pin was the heavyweight's eleventh of the season.
Upper Iowa will return to the mat in Dorman this Sunday. The Peacocks will host the Wolves of Northern State University at 2 p.m.
