FAYETTE, Iowa - The Upper Iowa volleyball team (1-10, 1-0 GLVC) picked up its first win of the season in the home opener against Missouri S&T (2-10, 0-1 GLVC). Lydia Imbrogno led the team defensively with 14 digs while adding eight kills as the Peacocks won in three sets (25-22, 25-22, 25-23).Â
Imbrogno's 14 digs marked a season-high for the senior. Martha Pace totaled 13 kills to lead the team. Pace and Imbrogno both had a team-high two aces. Kailey Porter added seven kills and a team-high three blocks.Â
Grace Fruzen totaled 29 assists, her second-most this season. Morgan Block added 12 digs with four assists. McKenna Diermeier had a season-high nine digs. This marks the first win for head coach Sarah Hull.Â
"First thing is just how proud I am of these girls," Hull said. "They've been through a lot so far this year. They just showed how much fight and how much grit they can bring out to the court. Even when those first two sets didn't start our way, they kept pushing, kept fighting and leaned on each other. It was just pure teamwork and pure team effort. I'm so proud of what they were able to do and turn things around for us."
The Peacocks were down early in the first set, but a 6-0 run aided by four Miner attack errors gave UIU an early 8-3 lead. Upper Iowa later used another 6-0 run to extend the lead to 17-7. Erica Conger had three kills during the run.
A 7-0 Missouri S&T run cut the lead to 20-16. Back-to-back kills by Pace later gave Upper Iowa a 24-19 advantage. The Miners then scored three straight points, but Pace ended the set with a kill to win, 25-22.Â
The Miners jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the second set, and later an 11-6 lead. The Peacocks then went on a 7-2 run to tie it at 14-14. The rest of the set was back-and-forth, with Imbrogno smacking back-to-back kills to end it, 25-22.Â
The third set continued the back-and-forth features of the second set. Trailing 20-19, Conger put down a kill to tie it at 20-20. The Peacocks then outscored S&T, 5-3, down the stretch with Porter tallying back-to-back kills to get the 25-23 win.Â
This marked the first three-set win for Upper Iowa since Oct. 19, 2024, against Ursuline (Ohio). The Peacocks totaled three wins in three sets last season.Â
The Peacocks hit .136 while Missouri S&T hit .105. UIU hit .237 in the first set with 14 kills and five errors. Upper Iowa outkilled Missouri S&T, 39-34.Â
The Miners had seven aces compared to six for UIU. S&T had three aces in each of the first two sets. The Peacocks were unblocked, 9-5, by the Miners. UIU had an edge in assists 37-30, while the Miners had the edge in digs, 59-58.Â
Missouri S&T was led by Elly Decker with 11 kills. Annie Arand led the team with 17 assists. Lexi Kosmopolis added 12 digs.Â
The Peacocks are back in action on Saturday against Maryville (Mo.) (4-7, 0-1 GLVC) for the Peacocks in Paradise Homecoming game at 5 p.m. The Saints fell in four sets to Truman State (Mo.) (3-9, 1-0 GLVC) on Friday night.
