FAYETTE, Iowa - The Upper Iowa volleyball team (1-11, 1-1 GLVC) lost on homecoming, 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-18) to the Saints of Maryville (Mo.) (5-7, 1-1 GLVC) on Saturday evening. Kailey Porter led the Peacocks offensively with 10 kills, her second-most in a match this season.
Maryville controlled the first set in its eight-point victory, outhitting the Peacocks, .267-.143. It was the best hitting set by the Saints, with Ella Domian and Caroline Glastetter totaling five kills each.Â
After trailing 11-5 early in the second set, the Peacocks didn't go away with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 11-10. A 4-0 run gave Maryville a 16-12 advantage, but the Peacocks battled back for a 21-20 lead. Porter tied the game at 23-23 with a kill, but a Saints kill by Lynsey Batson and a UIU attacking error gave the Saints the second set, 25-23.Â
The third set was a battle all the way until the 18-18 mark. Maryville then scored seven straight points via two kills and five Peacock attack errors. Upper Iowa hit -.021 in the final set.
Martha Pace added nine kills for the Peacocks with a .250 hitting percentage. She also had three digs and a service ace. Erica Conger had five kills with a .357 hitting percentage.Â
Grace Fruzen totaled a team-high 23 assists with six digs. Jaeden Cook added 10 assists.Â
Morgan Block led the Peacocks in digs with 16. McKenna Diermeier totaled a season-high 11 digs.Â
Ella Brinkman, Leslie Loganbach and Domian balanced the attack for Maryville with nine kills each. Glastetter also had eight kills. Taylor Reynolds led the Saints with 20 assists, while Olivia Klump totaled 16 digs to lead Maryville defensively.Â
Maryville finished the match outhitting Upper Iowa, .228-.121. The Saints had the advantage in kills, 41-36, blocks, 6-3, and aces, 6-2. Upper Iowa had the advantage in digs, 52-50.Â
The Peacocks will travel for their first GLVC road action next weekend against UIndy (9-5, 1-1 GLVC) and Lewis (Ill.) (7-6, 1-1 GLVC). The matchup vs. the Greyhounds is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT on Friday, Oct. 3, and the matchup vs. the Flyers is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT on Saturday, Oct. 4.
