Upper Iowa men's wrestling finished 6th in the Super Region V with 58.5 team points, fueled by five place winners. The day was highlighted by a runner-up finish from
Lawson Losee (174) and
Ethen Doty (149), who punched their ticket to the NCAA DII Wrestling Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. on Mar. 14-15.
St. Cloud State claimed the regional team title with 133.5 points, followed by UW Parkside (112) in second and Augustana (110.5) in third.
Losee won by fall (0:52) in his first match of the day over Grant Moraski (Sioux Falls) before rattling off two wins by decision in the following rounds. The 172-pounder dropped in a 10-5 decision in the championship bout.
Doty posted two wins by fall in his first two rounds of the event. He then recorded a slim 1-0 win by decision in the semi-final to send him to the championship match. The 141-pounder came up shy and dropped to Cael Larson (Augustana) in an 11-6 decision.
Ryan Wehner (141) finished in 4th place, coming up shy in the qualifying bout for nationals. He started the day 2-0, with two wins by sudden victory. He fell to Sean Solis (UMary) 2 by fall in the semi-finals and worked his way through the consolation bracket to the third-place match after a 2-1 win by decision.
Colter Bye (184) and
Geoffery Freeman (197) each took 6th in the competition. Bye received a bye before falling in the championship round one in a 5-3 decision. He battled back through the consolation bracket and picked up a win by fall (2:41) over Daevon Vereen (Sioux Falls) before dropping in the consolation semifinals in a 5-1 decision. Bye surrendered the fifth-place match by medical forfeit.
Freeman picked up a tech fall victory in round one before coming up short in the next round by a sudden victory. The 197-pounder rattled off two more wins before getting beat in a 4-1 decision in the consolation semifinals. He dropped the fifth-place match in an 8-5 decision.
