INDIANAPOLIS - The Peacock men's wrestling team had five wrestlers advance to day two of the 46th annual Midwest Classic hosted by UIndy on Saturday. Dawson Schmit (133), Ethen Doty (149), Preston Klostermann (157), Lawson Losee (174) and Braxten Westendorf (184) all wrestled their way into Sunday. 

Every Peacock who competed at the tournament picked up a win. Treyton Ackman (125) finished 2-2, Tanner Arjes (141) went 2-2, Nick Mueller (165) finished 1-2, Matthew Marcum (197) went 1-2 and Jose Del Toro (285) recorded a 1-2 finish. 

As a team, Upper Iowa has accumulated 44 team points to end day one in sixth place. The Peacocks are half a point behind Tiffin (Ohio) in fifth, 1.5 points behind Central Oklahoma in fourth and 3.5 points behind Glenville State (W.V.) in third. Pittsburgh-Johnston (Pa.) is in first place with 58 points. 

"It was a positive day sitting in sixth place with a young squad," said head coach Heath Grimm. "Our season vets, Doty and Losee, are sitting where they should be, and we feel like we're in a good spot after day one."

Losee won by fall against Max Wiezorek of Southwest Minnesota State and then won by tech fall over Kane Kettering of Seton Hill (Pa.). Doty's last match was a win by fall at 46 seconds over Anthony Nunes of UMary (N.D.). 

Schmit had a breakthrough win in the third round over Open Mat No. 16-ranked Elon Rodriguez of Wisconsin-Parkside to make it to the second day. The redshirt sophomore won both of his matches by one point.

Klostermann picked up wins by fall in the first two rounds. He lost to NWCA No. 4 Aaden Valdez of Adams State in the third round, but rebounded with a 12-6 win over Carson Freeman of Montevallo (Ala.) to make it to Sunday. 

"His level of effort and energy is off the charts, Grimm said. "What he is doing as a true freshman for our team is absolutely incredible." 

Westendorf lost his first match to Max Borton of Glenville State. The redshirt freshman responded by picking up three straight wins with a 5-2 victory over Jack Mackiernan of Mount Olive (N.C.) in his final bout of the day. 

Arjes had a solid day picking up two wins, but came up just short of making it to Sunday. He took an early loss to NWCA No. 5 Colton Stoneking, but rebounded with a tech fall and a fall win. The redshirt freshman challenged No. 2 Khyvon Grace of West Liberty in his last match of the day. Trailing by two with eight seconds left, Arjes went from broke but couldn't quite get the win. 

Mueller picked up a win against Tavontay Martinez of Kentucky Wesleyan, but fell to Lander's (S.C.) David Hunsberger and a highly experienced Tayten Gillette of Chadron State (Neb.). Hunsberger is the No. 1-ranked wrestler at 165 pounds. 

Marcum lost two tight matches on the day, with one against No. 7-ranked Nick Johnson of Glenville State. Ackman recorded a major decision victory and a tech fall win. Del Toro picked up a tiebreaker win over Jaylen Ignacio of Adams State (Colo.).

 "Jose found a way to get a win and we're proud of his effort," Grimm said "The team is really starting to support him and trying to give as much love as possible"

Competition for UIU's five wrestlers on Sunday will begin at 8:30 a.m. CT / 9:30 a.m. ET. They each will have the opportunity to place with two wins. 

"We treat this tournament like it's December nationals," Grimm said "It's run the same way. We're trying to get as many guys on the podium in the top eight. We just want to see more progression with their mental approach to compete for an entire match, and to wrestle in positions they want to be in."
