MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Upper Iowa men's wrestling had 15 of its 25 competitors place, including two first-place winners at Augsburg's (Minn.) Auggie Open. Lawson Losee took first place in the Gold 174 bracket, and Cale Nash placed first in the Freshmen 149 bracket.Â
This marks back-to-back first-place finishes for Losee after he won the Luther Open last weekend. The No. 2 wrestler in the nation won 4-2 over MSU Moorhead's Anthony Sykora in the quarterfinal. He then defeated Augsburg's Nick Alexander in the semifinal, 8-7, before winning by medical forfeit in the championship match.
Cale Nash won by a 10-4 decision over Zachary Thompson of Concordia Moorhead in the first round. He then won by tech fall of Luther's Chase Daugherty and secured a fall victory against Wyatt Brock of Johnson & Wales (R.I.) (3:50).Â
Treyton Ackman (Gold 125), Preston Klostermann (Gold 157), Braxton Westendorf (Gold 184) and Matthew Marcum (Gold 197) each took second place. Ethen Doty (Gold 149), Griffin Luke (Gold 184) and Brock Shaha (Freshmen 133) each took third place. Dawson Schmit (Gold 133), Owen Denstad (Gold 149), Reily Dolan (Gold 165) and Jose Del Toro (Freshmen 285) each took fourth.
Marcum won in both the quarterfinals and semifinals with falls. Klostermann beat Augsburg's Brady Swensen in the semifinals by a major decision, 13-4. Ackman picked up a fall and a tech fall win in the first two rounds. Westendorf won via fall and a 4-2 decision before losing to Division III No. 1 Brandt Bombard of Augsburg in a 5-1 decision.Â
"We bumped Preston up to the gold division to see how he would perform," said head coach Heath Grimm. "He did very well, and we were pleased with how he did."
Jackson Heaston (Gold 125) took fifth place after a 4-2 consolation win over Jacob Fitzpatrick of Minnesota State. Nick Mueller (Gold 165) beat Minnesota State's Kaleb Lochner by a major decision, 11-2, to take fifth as well.Â
Upper Iowa, Minnesota State, MSU Moorhead and Sioux Falls were the four Division II teams at the open. Amongst Division II teams, the Peacocks had the most wins by fall (13), the most wins by tech fall (nine) and the best win percentage (63%).Â
The Peacocks hit the mat next at the Buena Vista Open in Storm Lake, Iowa on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 9 a.m.Â
