INDIANAPOLIS - Upper Iowa wrestling's Matthew Marcum was named the GLVC Men's Wrestler of the Week on Wednesday afternoon. The junior from Lawrence, Kansas, picked up four wins this past weekend to take first at 197 pounds in the Buena Vista Open.
Marcum defeated Iowa State's CJ Carter by fall in overtime in the first-place match. He won by tech fall in round one, a 2-0 decision in the quarterfinal and a 4-0 decision in the semifinal. The quarterfinal win was over NJCAA No. 6 Jean Ngoma. After the weekend, Marcum moved up to No. 8 in the Open Mat rankings.
This is the first GLVC Wrestler of the Week award for Marcum in his young Upper Iowa career after transferring from Labette Community College (Kan.). He becomes the second Men's Wrestler of the Week for UIU this season, joining Lawson Losee on Nov. 20.
The Peacocks are gearing up for the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis this weekend on Dec. 13-14. Action begins at 9:30 a.m. ET / 8:30 a.m. CT at the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center and Nicoson Hall on the campus of UIndy.
