FAYETTE, Iowa - The No. 22 UIU men's wrestling team (1-0) opened the 2025-26 campaign with a dominant shutout victory over Hawkeye Community College. The Peacocks recorded six falls and three tech falls in the home win at Dorman Memorial Gymnasium.Â
Treyton Ackman started the night with a win over Mariyon Norton with a fall 65 seconds into the match. That ended up being UIU's quickest win by fall on the night. Dawson Schmit followed at 133 with a fall at 4:07 over Adam Fish.Â
Tanner Arjes recorded the first tech fall of the night over Hawkeye's Tate Turner, 19-2. No. 6 Ethen Doty recorded a fall in 77 seconds to beat Macael Baer. Collin Altensey and Nick Mueller each added tech falls at 157 and 165, respectively.Â
A forfeit at 174 gave Upper Iowa a 39-0 advantage. Braxten Westendorf at 184 and Matthew Marcum at 197 won with two more falls to bring it to 51-0.
The heavyweight match was the most entertaining of the night. Trailing 9-5 in the second period, freshman Jose Del Toro outmuscled Isaac Ericson to get the fall in front of an ecstatic Peacock crowd for his first career win.
There were two extra matches after the team-scored meet. Jonah Luensman defeated Tate Turner by a major decision, 17-9. No. 4 Lawson Losee used three takedowns and two four-point near falls to get the tech fall, 17-1.Â
As a team, the Peacocks totaled 20 takedowns compared to two for the RedTails. UIU had six four-point near falls, one three-point near fall and four two-point near falls.Â
Under head coach Heath Grimm, now in his 26th season at the helm of the UIU program, the Peacocks have posted 16 shutouts in 13 different seasons. Upper Iowa defeated Knox College, 54-0, and Illinois College, 57-0, in Grimm's first year at the helm. The Peacocks defeated UNC Pembroke, 47-0, at the National Duals in 2006, Northern State, 45-0, in an NSIC dual in 2007, a perfect 60-0 shutout of Wagner in 2009 at the Sprawl and Brawl Duals and a 41-0 NSIC dual win over MSU Moorhead in 2010. During the 2012-13 season, the Peacocks defeated Waldorf College, 53-0, and in 2013-14, UIU claimed three shutouts, including wins over Hannibal-LaGrange, 58-0, Calumet College, 57-0, and Northern State, 47-0. The Peacocks claimed a 45-0 victory over the UMary in January 2015 and a 56-0 win over Truman State in November 2018. UIU defeated Waldorf University, 57-0, and Southwest Minnesota State, 41-0, in 2022. The Peacocks picked up a shutout last December, 45-0, over Quincy.Â
Upper Iowa is in action next weekend in Decorah, Iowa, at the Luther College Open starting at 9 a.m. The Peacocks are back in Dorman on Tuesday, Nov. 25, against Ellsworth Community College.
