Upper Iowa men's wrestling hosted Indianapolis in Dorman Gymnasium on Friday for senior night and trumped them in a convincing 29-9 decision. The Peacocks improved to 3-0 in conference action and 10-4 overall.
The Peacocks were victorious in seven of the ten bouts over the Greyhounds, as they nabbed two by decision, three by major decision, one tech fall and one fall.
UIU recorded 16 takedowns compared to Indy's seven, while also registering two reversals, four four-point nearfalls, and one two-point nearfall.
The action opened at 125 pounds, where
Jackson Heaston held a 6-1 lead heading into the second round. His opponent scored a takedown in round two, followed by an escape and another takedown in round three, ultimately defeating Heaston with an 8-6 decision. This would be the only time the Peacocks found themselves trailing in the dual, as UIndy started with the 3-0 advantage.
Upper Iowa rallied off wins in the next three bouts, starting with
Dawson Schmit (133) who defeated Aiden Dallinger by major decision (19-7). Schmit recorded three takedowns and one two-point nearfall in the third round to fuel his success.
Ryan Wehner wrestled at 141 and defeated Brayden Lowery in the final seconds of the match, securing a takedown that followed a stalling point to come out on top in the 9-6 decision.
Ethen Doty (149) made quick work of his opponent, pinning Gavin Garcia in 49 seconds. Doty's win gave Upper Iowa a 13-3 lead.
Dalton Schams (157) fought a tough battle but came out on the wrong side of a sudden victory match. The match was tied, but in the final seconds of round three, Indianapolis picked up a stall warning point to send it into sudden victory. The Greyhounds recorded a takedown in extra time, cutting the team score deficit to 13-6.
UIU rattled off another three straight victories, sparked by
Collin Altensey's major decision win (9-0) against Shane Bates. The 165-pounder mustered two takedowns, two escapes, and picked up a point from stalling.
Lawson Losee (174) gave Dorman Gymnasium an impressive performance, as he recorded the only win by tech fall that evening. He defeated Kaden Lone in round one after managing two takedowns and three four-point nearfalls.
Colter Bye (184) found himself in a scrappy match with Aidan Petersen and won in a 4-1 decision. Bye. The match was tied 1-1 after two escape points, but Bye notched a takedown in round three at the last second as time expired to fuel his victory.
Geoffery Freeman fell in a close 4-2 decision to #1 Derek Blubaugh. The 197-pounder trailed 1-0 heading into the third round when Indianapolis picked up a takedown to secure the win. After this bout, Upper Iowa led 25-9.
In the last match of the night,
Clayton Ours (285) picked up a win by major decision (12-4). He started off strong with a takedown followed by a four-point nearfall in round one to lead 7-0. His opponent, Cale Gray, fought back and recorded an escape point and takedown in the second round, trailing 8-4 heading into the third round. Ours secured his win with an escape point and takedown to win 12-4.
Men's wrestling is back in action on Sunday against Maryville at 2 p.m. for Alumni Day in Fayette.
