Men’s Wrestling Set to Compete at Augsburg Open

THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK MEN'S WRESTLING… Upper Iowa is back on the mat on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Augsburg Open. The event will be held in Minneapolis, Minn., at Si Melby Hall starting at 9 a.m. There will be 14 teams in attendance across Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota and New Jersey. The tournament will feature a gold and freshmen bracket.

TICKET INFORMATION…  General admission for Saturday's tournament is $10 for an adult and $5 for senior citizens. The event has a no-refund policy and is a cashless admission. See the link attached to this story for more information and to purchase the tickets. 
 
LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS…  Last weekend, men's wrestling competed at the Luther Open in Decorah, Iowa. The elite bracket featured college veterans and the silver bracket featured freshmen and sophomores. Geoffery Freeman (197) placed the highest in the elite bracket in 4th. After going 2-0 to start the day, one win by fall and the other in a 10-8 decision, he surrendered the semifinal and 3rd place match by medical forfeit. Colby Lopez (141) and Ethen Doty (149) followed behind him, taking 5th place. Lopez went 5-1 on the day while Doty posted a 4-1 mark, his only loss coming to Koye Grebel from Iowa in a 7-1 decision. Ryan Wehner (141) came in 6th, while Jackson Heaston (125), Dawson Schmit (133) and Lawson Losee (174) each finished in 7th for the tournament. 
 
Nick Mueller (165) and Caleb Olson (157) were the highlights of the silver bracket as each placed first, Mueller with a 5-0 record and Olson 4-0. Tanner Arje (141) went 4-1 with two tech falls and took 2nd while Braxten Westendorf (184) and Owen Denstad (149) 3rd on the day. 
 
NWCA PRESEASON POLL… The Upper Iowa men's wrestling program is receiving votes (4) in the NWCA preseason poll. Three GLVC members are ranked in the poll; McKendree is the highest in 3rd (70 points), followed by Indianapolis in 5th (55 points) and Maryville tied for 8th (43 points). 
 
THE OPEN MAT RANKINGS… In the latest rankings by The Open Mat, Upper Iowa was listed 23rd in Dual in Team Rankings, while four individual Peacocks were ranked in the top 20 in their respective weight classes. Listed highest was Ryan Wehner (141) in 8th, followed by Ethen Doty (149) in 10th, Colter Bye (184) in 11th and Clayton Ours (285) in 20th
 
UP NEXT…  Men's wrestling has its first home duals the following weekend as they host Newman at 3 p.m. and Sioux Falls at 7 p.m. on Friday in Dorman Memorial Gymnasium.
