Peacocks Mosey Over to Missouri S&T Classic for Weekend Play

This Week in Peacock Volleyball… The Peacocks have one more tournament remaining before breaking into conference play next weekend. UIU will partake in the Missouri S&T Volleyball Classic this weekend in Rolla, Mo. They take on Oklahoma Baptist University on Friday at 10 a.m. and Missouri S&T at 2 p.m. They compete against Northwestern Oklahoma State University on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Recapping Week Two… The Peacocks went 2-1 last weekend at the Quincy Hawks Invitational. Upper Iowa breezed to a 3-0 victory versus Edinboro University of Pennsylvania on their first day of the Quincy Hawks Invitational. The Peacocks handled the first two sets with ease, claiming a 25-16 triumph in both. The third set was a closer race, but UIU managed to pull off a 25-21 win, despite being all tied up at 20 apiece.
 
In their second match of the weekend, the Peacocks handled Newman University with ease, defeating them 25-17, 25-14 and 25-16. Lydia Imbrogno led the team with ten kills, followed by Zoe Semelroth and Emily Kono with eight. Upper Iowa tallied 46 total kills while their opponents recorded 20.
 
In their final match of the weekend versus Quincy, Upper Iowa chipped away until the very end, but came up short in a 15-12 score in the final period of their five-set match. Quincy won the first set 25-11, but the Peacocks were able to answer and claim the second set 25-23. The teams continued to go back and forth as QU won the third (25-21) and UIU took the fourth (25-20). In the final set of the evening, the Peacocks scored the first point, but then let the Hawks go on a 4-0 slide. The score was tied up at 12-12, but Quincy rallied off the final three points with three straight kills to seal the game. 
 
Semelroth and Kono played big roles as they recorded a combined 37 kills out of the team's total 62. Pozorski recorded another three service aces in this match and added 52 assists. Kaci Beesecker held down the back line with 19 digs. 
 
All-Tournament Team Selection… Zoe Semelroth was named to the Quincy Hawks Invitational All-Tournament team for her efforts last weekend. The senior knocked down 42 kills in 11 sets (3.81) with a .401 hitting percentage to lead UIU to a 2-1 weekend. The UIU middle also added three aces and six blocks on the court. Semelroth has totaled 87 kills on the season (3.54) and holds a .360 attack percentage. She leads the team with blocks (22) and ties for second on the team in service aces with eight. 
 
A Glance Into GLVC Stats… Several Peacocks have etched their names onto the GLVC leaderboard for individual statistics. Emily Kono is ranked eighth for kills with 92 for the season, totaling an average of 3.54 per set. Semelroth has tacked on to fourth place for overall hitting percentage with .360, after tallying 87 kills in 27 sets thus far. Lastly, setter Nicole Pozorski is ranked sixth in assists with 258 on the season, for an average of 9.56 per set. 
 
Scouting the Bison (Courtesy of OBU Communications)… The Peacocks meet the Bison for the first time in school history. The Bison are coming off a three-set loss to Central Oklahoma on Sept. 12. In that match, they were held to 30 kills and a .143 attack mark, both season-lows. Sophomore right-side hitter Jh'Kyah Head tallied a team-high nine kills in the match. This season, she has made a significant jump offensively. She's averaging 2.03 kills per set and hitting .231. Those are both career-bests. Middle blocker Jill Leslie is off to a great start through nine matches. She ranks in the top-nine in the GAC in two categories: hitting percentage (.313; 6th) & blocks (0.89; 9th).Defensively, Maci Langford checks in at No. 2 in the GAC in digs (4.63 per set). Also of note, sophomore Rylee Martin is seventh in assists (6.0). OBU has done a good job this season blocking. To date, they are 34th in Division II in total blocks (67.0) and rank 40th in blocks per set (2.23).
 
Scouting the Miners (Courtesy of Missouri S&T Communications) … The Miners are currently 5-2 on the year, and A win on Thursday would allow them to match their longest winning streak from last season at six games.  The Miners have held all five opponents in their current winning streak to a hitting percentage below .200 and opposing teams have an attack percentage of only .185 on the season.
 
Meanwhile, S&T is coming off a match where it had its best hitting mark of the season of .420 in the win over Kentucky Wesleyan, committing only two attack errors over the final two sets of the three-set match.  Leading the way in that category is Shelby Ply (Rolla, MO/Rolla), who has a .355 mark on the season with 66 kills, while Madelyn Mason (Mount Horeb, WI/Mount Horeb) leads S&T with 88 kills and Jordan Burton (Olathe, KS/Olathe South) right behind her with 77. Ply also leads the Miners with 22 blocks, while Mason has 21 and Hannah Feltz (Wildwood, MO/Eureka) comes into play this week with 19.  Meiko Pearson (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest) has a team-leading 105 digs, while Annie Arand (Washington, MO/St. Francis Borgia) and Elise Mehaffy (Marion, IA/Marion) share the team lead with 139 assists.
 
Scouting the Rangers … The Rangers hold a 3-6 record on the season, recently breaking their five-game losing streak after defeating Southeastern Oklahoma State University 3-2 on Tuesday. This was the beginning of conference play for Northwestern, as they will return to GAC competition next Tuesday after the Missouri S&T classic this weekend. Erika Asencio Soriano paces the team with 109 kills (3.41), while Cameron Lobb leads the Rangers in assists with 226 (6.46). Brianda Diaz and Asencio Soriano clean up defensively, as they have registered 135 and 111 digs, respectively. 

Down the Road… Upper Iowa kicks off conference play with one match next week on Sep. 23 versus Truman State. The game will be held in Kirksville, Mo. and is scheduled for 3 p.m.
