Chase Luensman highlighted Upper Iowa's action in Session III of the 2023 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships. The Monticello, Iowa native, who grew up in the shadow of Cedar Rapids, will now wrestle for the NCAA title at 165 pounds tonight at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse.
Luensman was the aggressor in his match with No. 7 Ty Lucas of the University of Central Oklahoma. His 8-2 decision was fueled by three takedowns, an escape and a ride time point. Luensman showed off his motor, recording his final takedown in the final seconds of the bout. He will face No. 8 Hunter Mullin of Western Colorado in the finals on Saturday night.
Tate Murty put up a tough battle in his first match of the session, but came up short against Peter Kuster of Drury in a 5-3 result. He faced Jake Niffenegger of Mercyhurst in his second duel of the day. Murty scored a takedown and two nearfall points, but ended his season in 8th place in the nation after the 10-6 decision.
Colter Bye locked up in a shootout in his first match of the day, but came out on the wrong end of a 12-10 decision to Matt Weinberg of Kutztown University. In the seventh place match, Bye faced off with fellow NSIC wrestler No. 5 Reece Woracek of the University of Wisconsin at Parkside. The Cresco, Iowa native fell in a 6-2 result, but finished 8th place in the nation and earned his first All-American honor.
At the conclusion of the third session, Upper Iowa was in 19th place with 22.5 points.
Central Oklahoma led the team race with 113.0 points, while Lander is in second place with 78.0 points. Third and fourth place are separated by 0.5 points, as Western Colorado has totaled 61.0 points and St. Cloud State tallied 60.5.
