The Peacock junior is one 180 wrestlers across 10 weight classes looking to reach NCAA All-American status and earn a spot on the podium. Murty, UIU's sole national qualifier, heads into the championships with a 13-2 record this season with nine bonus-point wins including three wins by fall, four tech falls and a pair of major decisions. UIU's 141-pounder scored 141 points fueled by 30 takedowns.
Tate Murty (Fountain City, Wis.)
Murty will line up against Branson Proudlock of the University of Findlay, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the latest NWCA Division II polls. Proudlock is 26-1 this season and won the 141-pound NCAA Division II Super Region III title. Last season, Proudlock placed eighth at 141 earning NCAA All-American honors.
During the 2021 NCAA Division II Championships, Murty and Proudlock met in the consolation bracket in round three. Proudlock scored the first takedown, but Murty quickly escaped to his feet. Murty came out of a long scramble with a cradle locked in for a takedown and four nearfall points as the opening period wound down. Murty added two more takedowns over the final two periods and came away with the 11-4 decision.
Session One will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday and will include all preliminary matches and first round matches. All wrestlers will return to the mats in Session Two, which begins at 5 p.m. By the end of the session the active field will be reduced to just 80 wrestlers that all will have earned NCAA All-American honors. On Saturday, Session Three will begin at 10 a.m., while the Championship matches (Session Four) will start at 7 p.m.
Murty missed the first half of the season due to injury, but returned to post a 9-1 record in 10 bouts prior to the NCAA Super Region V Championships. After working the rust out during a pair of tournaments to open January with a 6-0 record, the Fountain City, Wis. product registered a 3-1 record in four Northern Sun Conference duals. The loss came in his first match back in Dorman Memorial Gymnasium in a 12-6 decision to Kolton Roth of Northern State University. Murty bounced back with three wins to close out the conference dual season.
At the NCAA Super Region V Championship, Murty won four straight matches after a 13-11 quarterfinal loss to Keaton Schorr of Augustana University, who placed second at the regional. His wins included three bonus-point decisions on the way to the third-place match. Murty scored a 19-3 tech fall, a second-period fall (3:38) and an 11-0 major decision to earn his shot at the third place and a berth to the NCAA Division II Championships. Murty, fueled by four takedowns and a ride time point, secured his place in St. Louis with a 9-2 victory and a third-place finish.
Last season, the Peacock grappler earned NCAA Division II All-American honors after placing sixth at the NCAA Division II Championships at 141 pounds. He posted a 9-8 record winning seven matches in the postseason including a 5-1 record at the NCAA Super Region V Championships to place third. Over his three-year career, Murty is 52-25 overall with 21 falls, five tech falls and 10 majors.
