The Peacock women and men's track and field teams were in action on Saturday in Decorah at the Luther Invitational. The women's team finished in fourth place out of eight competing teams with 81 points, while the men's team placed sixth out of eight with 33 points and a limited competition roster.
 
On the women's side, the Peacocks spread 13 athletes out over 11 events to score their 81 points. Upper Iowa's athletes won four events including the 55m dash, the 200m dash, the 400m race and the 4x400m relay. Maddie Stevens set a new program and Luther Invitational meet record with her run in the 400 meters. Her time of 58.72 seconds won the event and topped teammate Zakaria Fuller, who placed second, by just under three seconds.
 
Nailea Espinoza won the 55m dash in a time of 7.49 seconds and the 200m dash in a time of 26.65 seconds. The two wins supplied the Peacocks with 20 points toward their team score. The final event win came in the 4x400m relay where Fuller and Stevens teamed up with Margaret Nielsen and Brianna Crouch to finish in a time of 4:17.24. Nielsen grabbed second in the 55m hurdles, while Ashley Donovan and Crouch placed third and fourth in the 1,000 meters.
 
The men's team put 12 athletes into action on Saturday across seven events. Nathan Goranson secured a first-place finish in the 600-meter race in a time of 1:26.17. Jaylen Hobson took second in the triple jump after hitting his longest leap at 13.45 meters. Blake Smith placed third in the 600 meters in a time of 1:27.79, while David Snider placed third in the 3,000-meter race. Macklin Conrad paced the throwers with a fourth-place finish in the weight throw, 13.63 meters, and a fifth-place finish in the shot put, 12.53m.
 
Upper Iowa will now have a couple of weeks until their next meet when they compete at the University of Dubuque on Friday, Feb. 18. The event on the Feb. 18 will serve as the final tune-up for the Peacocks prior to the Northern Sun Conference Championships in Mankato, Minn.
