In their second matchup of the Bahama House Shootout, Upper Iowa pulled off a stunning, come-from-behind 87-79 overtime victory versus Elizabeth City State.
Trailing 70-61 with 1:05 left in regulation, the Peacocks' hopes for resurrection rested in the long ball.
Nick Reid and
Caleb Delzell drained the first two triples, and after Elizabeth City missed a jumper, the Peacocks worked the ball from left corner to left wing, where
Carter Janssen buried a contested 24-footer with three seconds on the clock to send the game into overtime.Â
The extra session belonged to the Peacocks. After
Jake Hilmer netted a pair of free throws at the 4:03 mark in overtime, UIU never surrendered the lead, coasting to an 87-79 win. Hilmer led the scoring efforts with a career-high 34 points, Delzell added 15,
Nick Reid posted a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds and
Lucas Duax finished the night with 13 points.
The victory is the third in a row for Upper Iowa (4-3).
The win seemed improbable midway through the second half when, after leading 44-41, the Peacocks went scoreless for six minutes. The drought allowed the Vikings to go on a 15-0 run and a 56-41 lead with nine minutes to play.
Hilmer broke the silence with a free throw and a fast break layup. From then, all five guys on the floor chipped in baskets to overcome their 15-point deficit. The momentum shift was enough to push through regulation and the overtime period, despite their cold night from the field.
The Peacocks' ragged stretch was the result of both cold perimeter shooting and an inability to finish drives at the rim.Â
The Peacocks shot 27-74 (36.5%), a 10-percent drop from yesterday's matchup with Wingate. They shot nearly the same percentage from downtown, as they netted 12-36 (33.3%) beyond the arc, five coming from Delzell.Â
The Vikings went 30-75 (40%) from the floor and shot 6-25 (24%) from three point land. Jaden Flournoy led his crew with 20 points while adding 11 rebounds. DeAndre Wilkins chipped in 15 points and hauled in a team-high 15 rebounds.
Upper Iowa resumes conference play next week as they host Concordia St. Paul on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. They travel to Minnesota State University-Mankato on Saturday, Dec. 3 to take on the Mavericks. Tip off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
