The Upper Iowa men's golf team earned a fourth-place finish as part of the 10-team field at the 2021 NSIC Men's Golf Championships. The Peacocks played three rounds in three days at the Shoal Creek Golf Club in Kansas City, Mo.
Logan Schweinefus paced the Peacocks and notched a second-place finish in the tournament while earning a spot on the NSIC All-Tournament Team.
The Peacocks improved their score through each of the three rounds as they shot 305, 298, and 293 to compile a total of 896 and finish fourth overall. Upper Iowa's 293 total in the third round was tied with second-place finisher Bemidji State for the third best total in round three, and just five strokes back of first-place Winona State. UIU's average of 3.27 (+16) on par-three was the second best mark in the tournament. The Peacocks tied for the fourth-best mark on par-four as they averaged 4.39 (+65) on those holes, and UIU had the fifth-best par-five scoring with an average of 5.07 (+3). The Peacocks were second overall with 159 pars over the tournament, and their 28 birdies were tied for fourth.
Upper Iowa finished 10 strokes back of the University of Sioux Falls (309-286-291), who hit 886 and finished third. The Peacocks finished 10 strokes ahead of fifth-placed Minnesota State University - Mankato (906), who hit 305, 304, and 297. Winona State University (883) finished first in the tournament as they shot 301, 294, and 288 to edge second-place Bemidji State University (884, 305-286-293) by just a single stroke.
Logan Schweinefus secured a second-place finish in the tournament to earn himself a spot on the NSIC All-Tournament Team as one of the top-five competitors. The UIU senior put together rounds of 76, 70, and 66 to compile a three-day total of 212. Schweinefus' 70 (-1) in round two was tied for the second-best second round, and his 66 (-5) in round three was the best individual mark in round three by three strokes. Logan's 66 in the third round was the low-round of the tournament, and it also set a new career-low for the senior. The Ossain, Iowa native was tied for the third-best mark in par-three scoring with an average of 3.00 (E), tied for the third-best par-four scoring with a 4.12 (+4) average, and led the tournament with a 4.44 (-5) average in par-five scoring. The South Winneshiek HS product recorded a tournament-best 12 birdies while also notching one of just four eagles hit in the Championships.
Chris Cooksley (75-74-77) and
Trent Shaw (77-74-75) finished the tournament tied for 14th overall as they tallied matching totals of 226. Cooksley recorded 36 pars in the event to finish tied for the third-best total overall, and his 4.21 (+7) par-four average was tied for 11th. Shaw's 35 pars were tied for the fifth-highest total in the tournament, and his par-three average of 3.25 (+3) was tied for 12th.
Will Babcock (232) tied for a 28th-place finish after rounds of 77, 80, and 75. Babcock tied for the sixth-best par-three average at 3.08 (+1), and his 34 pars tied for the ninth-best mark.
Nathan Petrak (253) finished in 49th to round out the Upper Iowa championship squad. Petrak tied Schweinefus for the largest margin of improvement (-10) from round one to round three as he tallied scores of 89, 85, and 79.
