UIU Falls to UMC in Series Finale

Upper Iowa fell 10-6 on Monday afternoon completing the three-game sweep for the University of Minnesota Crookston. The Peacocks scored six runs in the fifth led-off by a Ryan Hull solo shot. The big inning, however, was not enough to take down Golden Eagles high-powered offense. Following the game, UIU moves to 3-8 overall, 2-5 in conference play. UMC remains undefeated at 12-0, 8-0 in the NSIC.

Minnesota Crookston got on the board first in the top of the second. After a leadoff walk from Scott Finberg, Jake Hjelle sent a solo shot over the left field fence to make it 2-0 in favor of Crookston.

The Golden Eagles added three more runs in the third. A quartet of walks scored the first run before Hjelle drove a double into left field bringing two more home, picking up his fourth RBI, and giving UMC a 5-0 advantage.

Upper Iowa responded with a huge inning in the bottom of the fifth scoring six runs. Ryan Hull started things off with a surefire solo shot to left field, his second of the season. Kyle Routhieaux and Jake Hilmer reached on a walk and a base hit, respectively, before both advanced on a double steal. Alex Greene then shot a single up the middle scoring both base runners. Evan Kerlin walked before a Matthew Hall single brought Greene in. Kerlin scored himself following an Adrian Trujillo single and Noah Gyldenvand receiving a free pass with the bases loaded. Hall scored to cap off the big inning on a wild pitch giving UIU a 6-5 advantage, their first lead of the afternoon.

The Peacocks saw seven arms in the outing. Sam Marhefke started the day going 2.2 innings. The junior was followed by Brennan Sefrit, Chris Harsh, Colin Lacey, Grant Ver Voort, Steve Marhefke, and Jason Katz in relief.

The Golden Eagles were able to tie things up in the eighth when Jake Hjelle hit a solo shot well beyond the fence in left center.

Crookston produced four more runs in the final two innings securing the 10-6 victory. Two came home in the eighth on a walk and a pair of base hits. Another pair scored in the ninth after Hjelle singled prior to a two-run homerun to right field off the bat of Parker Strow.
