The Upper Iowa women's bowling team continued its 2020-21 season placing 10th at the Big Red Invitational on Feb. 26 - 28 at Hollywood Bowl in Lincoln, Neb. The tournament was hosted by the nation's third ranked, University of Nebraska.
On day one, the team competed in baker team play format. Upper Iowa went 1-4 on the day. The Peacocks dropped the first games of the day to the No. 22 University of Central Missouri (1025-867) before defeating the host, No. 3 University of Nebraska, by a 949-938 count. The win marks the first time the Peacocks have defeated a top five opponent and the third time UIU has defeated a ranked team this season. Upper Iowa dropped the remaining three games to No. 11 Lincoln Memorial University (1099-904), No. 2 Arkansas State University (1085-1003), and No. 9 Maryville University 998-847. The 1,003 pins in game four was the highest total in program history in a five-game baker set and the first time UIU has surpassed the 1,000 pin milestone.
On day two, the team competed in traditional match play format. Upper Iowa went 1-3 on the day moving to 2-7 overall. The Peacocks fell to No. 1 Mckendree University (1153-985) before picking up a win over No. 19 Valparaiso University (1,020-954). The win broke the program's record for a traditional game by over 70 pins as well as marking UIU's fourth win over a ranked opponent this season and the second time in program history that the Peacocks have surpassed 1,000 pins. Upper Iowa dropped a pair of games to No. 4 Vanderbilt University (1114-937) and No. 8 Youngstown State University (1062-949) to end Saturday's slate.Â
On day three, UIU competed in three more traditional games. The Peacocks split a pair of games versus Quincy University falling 934-863 before picking up a 944-862 win. Upper Iowa faced Valparaiso in their final game of the tournament where they were defeated 1065-843
Individually, Ashlyn Burkeybile led the way with 1,557 pins, a 194.6 pins per game average, and the high game of 233 pins. Following Burkeybile was Kendra Anifer (1,497), Alex Dombrowski (1,361), Alyssa Bilak (1,147), Deanna Hopkins (842), Denyse Turnquist (706), and Abigail Matula (168).
PEACOCKS OF THE TOURNAMENT...Â
- Ashlyn Burkeybile set a new program-high for tournament average with 194.6 pins per game during her eight games bowled over the weekend. The freshman's high game of 233 pins marks the third best in program history and the fourth time a Peacock has surpassed 230 pins in a single game.
- Kendra Anifer's tournament average of 187.13 also cracked the top five in UIU history.
