Chase Luensman and
Zach Ryg have earned a spot on the 2020-21 All-Northern Sun Conference Wrestling First Team. The NSIC announced their all-conference teams on Thursday and the pair of Peacocks were listed at the top of their respective weight classes.
Following the announcement, Peacock Head Wrestling Coach
Heath Grimm said, "Recognitions like this always mean more when voted on by the coaches you compete against. Respect is earned, not given. Both of these men lead by example. They give max effort and are humble. What makes this honor more impressive is the fact that Ryg is a freshman and Luensman is a sophomore. The future is bright!"
Luensman, a true sophomore for the Peacocks, competed at 157 pounds this season after grabbing a NWCA All-American honor at 149 pounds as a freshman in 2019-20. The Monticello, Iowa product put together a 5-1 record in his six matches in the shortened season. Luensman won his first five matches of the season including a 21-6 technical fall in UIU's dual with Minnesota State University Moorhead and an 11-3 major decision in the Peacocks' matchup with Minnesota State University, Mankato. His lone loss came at St. Cloud State University, where he fought back after surrendering a takedown and four-point nearfall to only lose by two points, 9-7. In his two years, Luensman is now 35-10 in a Peacock singlet with 14 bonus-point wins including three falls, five tech falls and six majors.
Ryg, a redshirt freshman, was electric in his first season on the varsity mat for the Peacocks. The Plymouth, Iowa native went 6-0 in his run through the Northern Sun Conference at 197 pounds. Ryg scored bonus-point wins at MSU Moorhead with a win by fall (2:52) and against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside with a major decision. Ryg entered the national rankings in the National Wrestling Coaches Association's most recent polls after defeating Noah Ryan of St. Cloud State. Ryg was leading 4-3 in the third period when Ryan had to injury default.
Both Luensman and Ryg are ranked at the top of their weight classes in the regional rankings heading into the NCAA Division II Super Region V Championships this Saturday.
