The No. 16 Peacock wrestling team got back into the win column with a 21-12 victory over the No. 25 University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Thursday night. Upper Iowa hosted the Rangers in the final dual in Dorman Memorial Gymnasium this season and secured the win with six wins in the ten dual bouts before claiming all seven of the extra matches. With the win, UIU improved to 2-2 on the year, while Parkside dropped to 1-3 in their first season as an affiliate wrestling member of the Northern Sun Conference.
Chase Luensman opened the dual at 157 pounds for the Peacocks. The No. 6 ranked wrestler in the nation needed extra time to figure out Ben Durocher, but scored the winning takedown in the first sudden victory period to post a 5-3 win and improve to 4-0 on the season.
Parkside made a lot of noise over the next three matches claiming decisions at 165, 174 and 184 to move out to a 9-3 lead at the first media break. Shane Gantz scored a 4-0 victory over UIU's
Ryan Steffen, who saw his first action of the year on Thursday. Ryan Neu (174) and Reece Woracheck (184) then upset two of Upper Iowa's ranked wrestlers. Neu grabbed a 13-9 win over No. 8
Myron Crawford and Woracheck outlasted No. 8
Dalton Hahn in the tiebreaker to win 2-1.
Zach Ryg broke the Ranger run with a dominant performance at 197 pounds. Ryg claimed five takedowns en route to a 12-2 major decision for his fourth win of the season and pulled UIU back within two points, 9-7, on the scoreboard.
Jordan Baumler kept the momentum rolling and pushed the home team ahead, 10-9, after registering a 4-2 decision at heavyweight thanks to a first period takedown, an escape and a ride time point.
Parkside got their last win of the night in the 125-pound bout between No. 4 Joe Arroyo and UIU's No. 11
Kaden Anderlik. Arroyo posted a 6-2 decision to remain undefeated; he was fueled by a pair of takedowns. The win returned the Rangers to the lead, 12-10, with three matches to go.
Donny Schmit toed the line at 133 and dominated his matchup with Lucas Schevikhoven recording four takedowns on the way to a 9-4 win that gave the home team a one-point lead, 13-12.
Upper Iowa put the dual out of reach with a pair of major decisions at 141 and 149 to close out the scoring. No 11
Tate Murty scored an impressive 11-1 major over Francesco Shiro thanks to two takedowns, a four-point nearfall and a reversal, while
Eric Faught followed with an 11-2 major behind five takedowns. The two majors pushed the final margin to nine, 21-12.
Upper Iowa kept the momentum rolling for the limited home crowd posting wins in all seven extra matches.
Connor Manderfeld opened the extra matches with a 3-0 decision at 141 pounds followed by an 11-2 major decision by
Dalton Nelson at 184 pounds. Nelson took advantage of two takedowns and a four-point nearfall.
Dalton Schams put together a 9-2 win at 149 pounds with two takedowns and a four-point nearfall.
Mac Spotts rallied to secure a 7-3 win at 157 pounds thanks to a late escape, takedown and two nearfall points.
Scott Kellenberger scored his first win of the season at 165 pounds when he controlled a 10-3 decision that included a pair of takedowns and four nearfall points.
Jamie Gehling used two first-period takedowns and then maintained his advantage for a 5-2 win at 174 pounds. In the final bout of the night,
Bodie Garnier registered a third period fall after his fifth takedown in the 197-pound match.
Upper Iowa will be on the road for their final two duals of the regular season with action at Augustana University on Feb. 4 and at No. 1 St. Cloud State University on Feb. 11.
