The Upper Iowa women's bowling team continued its 2020-21 season placing ninth at the Columbia Saints 300 Invitational on Jan. 22 - Jan. 24 at Bowlero Lakeside in Valley Park, Mo. The tournament was hosted by the nation's 18th ranked, Maryville University. The Peacocks' play was good enough to place ahead of two other teams.
On day one, the team competed in baker match play format. The Peacocks got off to a slow start dropping a pair of games to No. 4Â University of Nebraska (925-794) and Tusculum University (801-785). Upper Iowa reversed course picking up three straight victories over Kentucky Wesleyan University (949-804), Drury University (917-915), and Youngstown State University (862-836). UIU's final win of the day over 10th ranked Youngstown State was their first victory over a ranked opponent this season.Â
On day two, the team competed in traditional match play format. Upper Iowa went 1-3 on the day, moving to 4-5 through two days of play. The Peacocks dropped their first pair of games to Lincoln Memorial University (901-831) and No. 1 Mckendree University (1105-780). UIU claimed its lone win of the day against Quincy University (953-868) before falling to Lewis University (839-764). The 953 in game three set a new program high score for a team traditional game.Â
Competing for the Peacocks in traditional play was Deanna Hopkins (912), Denyse Turnquist (646), Alex Dombrowski (535), Kendra Anifer (518), Isabelle Bergsbaken (505), Marissa McAuliffe (475), Ashlyn Burkeybile (302), and Alyssa Bilak (257).
On day three, the teams competed in their final traditional game before partaking in a best of seven baker team series. Upper Iowa fell to Maryville University (919-853) to finish the tournament with a 4-6 record heading into bracket play. Upper Iowa won the baker team series five games to two over Tusculum University to secure a ninth-place finish.
