The Upper Iowa softball team dropped the final meeting against Drury University as the Panthers plated two in the seventh to win in walk-off fashion. The Peacocks tallied three more hits and were able to force the home team into four errors, but couldn't take advantage of those opportunities as eight runners were left stranded. Drury improved to 6-4 on the season with the victory, while Upper Iowa fell to 1-6.
Kaitlyn Carlson went 2-for-2 with a walk to lead the Peacocks, while Kennedy Newell tallied two hits, a RBI, and a stolen base.
The Peacocks will now have two weeks off to prep for 10 games at the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. between Mar. 7-12.Â
Drury 4, Upper Iowa 3
After playing a scoreless three innings, the two teams traded a pair of runs in the fourth. In the top half, Ali Green opened with a double to center field. She later came home on a throwing error by the Panthers that also allowed Payton Kastenschmidt to get onboard and move into scoring position. Sam Jessie entered the game as a pinch runner for Kastenschmidt, and the freshman was sacrificed over to third by Amanda Williams. A base hit up the middle from Kennedy Newell plated Jessie and gave UIU a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers put runners at the corners with no outs in the home half thanks to a leadoff double and throwing error on a fielder's choice. Both runners came around to score via a RBI-groundout and double to left field on consecutive at-bats.Â
Two more scoreless innings passed by as Upper Iowa left three stranded on two hits and an error while Drury was limited to just one base runner on a hit-by-pitch. The Peacocks then regained the lead in the top of the seventh when Kaylee Frenette scored on a fielder's choice, but Upper Iowa couldn't add any more cushion before sending the game to the bottom of the seventh.Â
After a lead-off single and pair of walks loaded the bases for Drury, Sydney Wilcox entered the circle in relief of Abby McKay who took over pitching duties in the fifth. The senior was able to induce a groundout to second base as the tying run crossed the plate, but a RBI-single on the following play gave the Panthers the walk-off series win.Â
McKay (0-2) received the loss after allowing two runs on two hits and a pair of walks in 2.0 innings. Emily Kisch pitched the first 4.0 innings for Upper Iowa and allowed two runs on two hits while striking out a pair. Wilcox faced two batters in the seventh and gave up one hit.Â
