Upper Iowa placed eighth at the ESU Relays hosted by Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas to kickoff their 2019 outdoor track and field schedule. UIU was one of ten teams at the event scoring 37 points thanks to points in five events.
The host Hornets claimed the team title narrowly defeating Winona State University by three and a half points, 152.5-149. The University of Central Missouri placed third as a team with 120 points.
Brinn Grunder led the team with a pair of solid performances in shot put and hammer throw. Grunder won the hammer throw event with a mark of 48.45 meters, breaking her own school record, to score 10 points for the team and placed second in the shot put to earn 8 points after a top throw of 13.86 meters, which meets the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships.
UIU scored four more points in the field events thanks to the efforts of
Caitlin Himes. Himes placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 40.28 meters.
Jenna Ross scored three points for the Peacocks in the 200 meter race placing sixth after crossing the line in a time of 27.30 seconds. Ross also was a part of UIU's 4x200 meter relay team that placed third earning six points.

Kenzie Soeken put together a time of 1:51.94 for the four legs to break the school record in the event.
The final points for the day came in the sprint medley relay as Upper Iowa placed third in a time of 4:27.22 to set another new school record and claim the final six points of the day. The sprint medley team was made up of Soeken,
Allison Trenkamp, Hill and
Cassiddy Wilson (pictured above).
