The Peacock softball team found a way to win the late innings on Sunday in their second day at the PFX Games in Clermont, Fla. Game 1: Upper Iowa 3 - Mercyhurst 2 (9 Inn.)
Game one featured a pitching dual most of the way between Upper Iowa's
Emily Kisch and Mercyhurst's Sarah Eschleman. The Peacocks fell behind in the fifth inning after surrendering an unearned run, and trailed 2-0 after six. UIU needed an answer in their half of the sixth inning, and they found it.
With two outs and the bases empty, the Peacocks went to work. A hit-by-pitch for
Shannon Nix and a single by
Erin Drahozal was followed by
Amanda Williams reaching on an error to pull within one, 2-1.
Jenny Budds then delivered a run-scoring single to tie the game. UIU would then need to hold on to in late innings, and Kisch delivered, retiring 9 of the last 10 batters she faced.
In the home half of the ninth inning, Drahozal got it started once again. She would come around to score after a sacrifice bunt, a bunt for a hit, and an RBI from
Payton Kastenschmidt. The Peacocks walked off in dramatic fashion to complete the comeback.
Game 2: Upper Iowa 3 - Findlay 1
The Peacocks trailed right away in the first inning in game two to the Findlay Oilers, but
Jaclyn Thompson bounced back, not allowing another run the rest of the way. Overall, Thompson went seven strong allowing one unearned run on just two hits, while picking up five strikeouts.
Upper Iowa bounced back in the third inning to tie the game at one-apiece.
Sami Kay Shafranski tripled to left to get in scoring position, and was driven in by teammate
Katie Crogan. The pitchers then took over for the middle innings.
UIU broke through in the final inning again, and once again it was Drahozal getting things started. Drahozal reached on an error by the shortstop, and would move to third base via another Oiler error in the field. Shafranski then delivered a two-run single into center to give the Peacocks a 3-1 lead. Thompson slammed the door shut in the bottom half to earn the victory.
