Miners Take Three of Four Against Peacocks In Rolla

Missouri S&T 6 - Upper Iowa 1 || UIU 2 - MS&T 1 || MS&T 16 - UIU 8 || MS&T 13 - UIU 3. The Peacocks earned a split Saturday, and after a day of bad weather, UIU surrendered 29 runs in a doubleheader sweep Monday.

The Peacock baseball team fell three times in a four-game series at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo. Upper Iowa split the first two games on Saturday before being swept on Monday after weather postponed Sunday's action. After the first six non-conference games, UIU is 2-4 on the season.

Upper Iowa is scheduled to play at home for the first time this season this Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 17-18 against the No. 24 Huskies of St. Cloud State University.

Game 1: MS&T 6 - UIU 1
Upper Iowa dropped the series opener to Missouri S&T by a 6-1 count. The Miners drew first blood in the third inning, but Upper Iowa was quick to tie the game in the top of the fourth. Jacob Greco doubled to right center and Conner Klostermann walked to open the frame. Zac Cain singled through the right side to plate Greco and knot the score. Missouri S&T scored two in the bottom of the inning to break the tie and pushed their lead to five in the sixth inning with three runs on five hits including a two-run single.

Dan Borek picked up the win with seven innings of work allowing just one run on three hits while striking out six. Collin Thomas (0-1) took the loss for UIU after going four innings and allowing three runs on six hits while recording four strikeouts. Greco led the Peacocks at the plate with a pair of hits and a run scored in the game. Parker Kray threw well in relief going 2.2 innings without surrendering a win in relief for UIU.

Game 2: UIU 2 - MS&T 1
The Peacocks relied on a pair of early runs and the strong right arm of Kolton Gonnerman to score a 2-1 win. Gonnerman only gave up one run on three hits during his seven-inning, complete game. The senior struck out five Miners from the hill. Upper Iowa scored their two runs in the top of the first when Greco doubled to give UIU a pair of runners in scoring position with one out. AJ Friedrich singled through the right side to push both Peacocks to the plate. In the seventh inning, Missouri S&T cut the margin in half with a run on a single through the right side, but Gonnerman closed the door and earned the win with a strikeout. Greco added another two hits, while four other Peacock batters each registered a hit.

Game 3: MS&T 16 - UIU 8
UIU took an opening 3-0 lead in the first inning after Greco roped a run-scoring triple into left field, a fielder's choice off the bat of Hans Alwin, and a steal of home. Missouri S&T cut into their deficit in the home half of the first off pitcher Cain, and the Peacocks led 3-2 after an inning. From that point forward, it was all Miners. S&T tallied four in the second, three in the third, and six in the seventh to dominate the game, and forcing four UIU pitchers.

Offensively,  the Peacocks added another run in the third inning, but trailed big from that moment on. A run in the sixth came from Cole Scieszinski, and three runs in the seventh inning were highlighted by a three-run bomb from Klostermann. However, the Miners offense two much in the 16-8 defeat.

Game 4: MS&T 13 - UIU 3
The Miners jumped out to the lead this time in the final game of the series, leading 3-0 in the first frame. Consecutive singles and a sacrifice fly pushed runs across, and the  Peacocks faced an immediate deficit. Trailing 4-0 in the top of the third inning, Cain ripped a run-scoring single up the middle, and was followed by the first home run of the season by Greco. UIU was back within one, 4-3, but the Miners offense kept going.

S&T scored 29 runs on Monday, including runs in every inning of the weekend finale. It was a 16-hit effort off Peacock pitchers Angel Cosme, who took the loss, Tyus Adkins, Tanner Poor, Parker Kray, Clayton Lieb, and Jeremy Maschino.

Emmett Kulick's two hits led the way for the  Peacocks in game four.
