The Upper Iowa men's soccer team will look to put the brakes on a four game losing skid when they host the Oklahoma Baptist Bison on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff against the Bison is scheduled for noon and will be the first time Oklahoma Baptist makes the trip to Fayette. The two sides met for the first time last season when the Bison topped the Peacocks 3-2 in Shawnee Oklahoma.
The Peacocks are coming off a tough conference loss to MIAA rival Lindenwood on Sunday afternoon which saw the first goal of the season for Junior captain
Seth Russell. The match also featured a solid performance from Peacock goalkeeper
Nikolai Gogol who recorded ten saves in the effort for Upper Iowa. Sunday's match marks the third time this season that Gogol has recorded ten or more saves in a single game. This is the first time a Peacock goalkeeper has accomplished that feat since the 2012 season when Jordan Bell notched three games with saves in the double digits. Gogol currently leads the MIAA in saves and his 6.2 saves per game ranks 12
th in the nation at the NCAA DII level.
Upper Iowa has dropped four straight but have endured a tough stretch of opponents. Three of the past four teams that the Peacocks faced have either been nationally ranked or received votes. Northeastern State was ranked 17
th when the Peacocks squared off against them, Fort Hays was ranked 14
th, and the Lindenwood Lions received votes in the most recent poll.
The Oklahoma Baptist Bison will take the pitch three times this week including two matches in the MIAA with Southwest Baptist on Thursday, and Upper Iowa on Saturday. So far this season the Bison have struggled to maintain their composure as they lead the nation in yellow cards with 44 and have been forced to play shorthanded 5 times.
The Bison will be coming to Fayette with a 3-12 record and have only been able to pick up one win on the road this year. Oklahoma Baptist have struggled to score on the road, scoring just 8 goals away from home while they have conceded 22. The Peacocks will need to contain Alejandro Castillo and Jesus Andrade who have both netted four goals so far this season.
The Peacocks should matchup pretty well with the Bison as Oklahoma Baptist take more shots per game averaging 14.4 compared to Upper Iowa's 9.8. However, Upper Iowa has been more efficient with their shots owning a .509 shot on goal percentage and .120 shot percentage while the Bison are at .417 and .069 respectively. The Peacocks hold the edge defensively too, Gogol has lead the team to a 1.89 goals against average and a .756 save percentage whereas the Bison have allowed 3.44 goals per game and their goalkeepers have recorded a .636 save percentage.
