Peacocks Face Vikings in Pivotal NSIC Dual

Upper Iowa and Augustana are both ranked 19th in the nation according to the NCAA Division II Coaches Poll heading into their NSIC dual in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Sunday.

THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK WRESTLING… Upper Iowa (9-3, 5-1 NSIC) is on the road in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Sunday at 2 p.m. for a Northern Sun Conference dual against the Vikings of Augustana University. In a new poll adopted by the Wrestling Coaches Association the Peacocks and Vikings are currently tied for 19th in the NCAA Division II Coaches Poll Tournament Rankings. Upper Iowa enjoys a 7-2 lead in the series since Augie joined the NSIC prior to the 2008-09 season, although the home team has won the last three duals between the two squads.

NCAA.COM POWER RANKINGS… Roger Moore, a senior writer for NCAA.com, has the Peacocks in eighth place following last week's first loss in the Northern Sun Conference. His top eight in the power rankings include St. Cloud State University, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, the University of Central Oklahoma, McKendree University, Mercyhurst University, the University of Nebraska-Kearney and Maryville University, while Notre Dame College, the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, Upper Iowa and the University of Indianapolis are tied for eighth. Moore lists Colorado State-Pueblo, Wheeling Jesuit, Ashland, California Baptist, Findlay, Kutztown, Minnesota State and Augustana (S.D.) as knocking on the door to the power rankings.
 
SCOUTING THE VIKINGS… The Vikings enter the dual against Upper Iowa with a 10-5 (4-0 NSIC) dual record on the season. Last weekend, Augustana remained unbeaten in NSIC duals with road victories over U-Mary, 24-13, and Minot State, 50-0. The top wrestlers for the Vikings are Aero Amo (184) and Michael Lowman (285). Amo ranks fifth nationally at 184 pounds with a record of 28-6 and a team-high 13 pins and six tech falls. Lowman holds a record of 20-7 with a dual record of 8-1 and eight falls on the season.
 
LEADING THE PEACOCKS… Four Peacocks came away with wins last week at Minnesota State. Jordan Roths (141), Damian Penichet (149, #5), Colbey Vance (165) and Logan Hopp (285, #8) all scored victories with Vance picking up a bonus-point thanks to a major decision. For the season, Penichet has a team-high 22 wins, while freshman Nick Baumler (184) and Vance are close behind with 21 and 20 victories, respectively. Vance and Baumler lead the team with 11 bonus-point wins apiece. Vance's have come thanks to 7 pins, 1 tech fall and 3 majors, while Baumler has recorded four wins by fall, a tech fall and six majors.

THE POSTSEASON… The regional alignment has loaded the qualifying tournament with 15 teams. Of those 15 teams, 9 call the NSIC home, while three schools will come from the Great Lakes Valley Conference (Truman State, Maryville and McKendree), two more from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (University of Central Missouri and Lindenwood) and one from the Great American Conference (Ouachita Baptist). The outstanding, two-day regional tournament (Feb. 24-25) will take place in Moorhead, Minn. on the campus of Minnesota State University, Moorhead and will feature 150 wrestlers battling for just 40 berths to the NCAA Division II Championships. The top four wrestlers in each weight class will earn a spot at the NCAA DII Championships in Birmingham, Ala. on Mar. 10-11. 

NCAA DIVISION II HISTORY… Upper Iowa has placed in the top seventeen at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in ten of their eleven years in the division. The Peacocks placed sixteenth a season ago with a pair of All-Americans.  The best four finishes at the Division II level came with a third place trophy in 2010, fourth place in 2011, fifth place in 2013 and sixth place in 2012.
