The No. 8 Peacock wrestling team was in Rochester, Minn. on Saturday for their first tournament action of the season. Coming off a 51-3 win over Truman State University on Thursday, Upper Iowa put their wrestlers that are redshirt sophomores and younger on the mat at the Yellowjacket Open hosted by Rochester Community and Technical College. The Peacocks had 18 wrestlers in action that combined for 13 falls. Four claimed outright titles and two shared the title at 184 pounds.
 
Brock Benitz (157), Turner Black (165), Nick Baumler (197) and Triston Westerlund (HWT) all went undefeated and won their brackets. Benitz went 4-0 with three falls to reach the championship match where he defeated Anthony Maia of Iowa Lake CC by a 6-5 decision. Black won all five of his matches including a tech fall; his 3-2 decision over Alfred Daniel of Rochester C&TC in the finals to avenge a 9-2 loss to the same wrestler last season. Baumler put together a 4-0 day and did not allow an offensive point while recording a major decision and tech fall to reach the finals where he beat Mason Hawkins of Rochester C&TC by a 6-3 score. Westerlund also went 4-0 on the day with a pair of wins by fall including the championship match over Luis Pinto of Rochester C&TC in 51 seconds.
 
The Peacocks also dominated the 184 pound bracket claiming the top three spots. Connor Williams (unattached) and Dalton Hahn (unattached) both reached the finals match, but did not compete against each other, while Jamie Gehling claimed third place. Williams went 3-0 including his first victory over Isaiah Cox of Iowa Lakes CC, a junior college All-American last year, and a 7-4 decision over Gehling, while Hahn also went 3-0 with a major decision. Gehling went 3-1 on the day.
 
Five other Peacocks placed on the day including Ryan Schmalen (125, 3rd, 2-1), Aaron Baker (141, 8th, 2-2), Chase Seaney (141, 6th, 4-2), Zach Bruns (149, 6th, 4-2), Dalton Nelson (unattached, 174, 5th, 4-1).
 
Upper Iowa will get back on the mats next Saturday, Nov. 11 at the Luther Open in Decorah, Iowa.
