Box Score The Peacock men's soccer team had a long night in St. Charles, Mo. Thursday. Upper Iowa dropped their first match of the weekend in heartbreaking fashion, 2-1 in double overtime, to the Ouachita Baptist Tigers. UIU's match was originally suppose to kick off at 6 p.m., but lightning in the area forced the game prior to delay. The Peacocks did not begin their match until 7 p.m. and then grinded out 101 minutes of soccer. UIU held a 1-0 advantage in the second half, but in the 82nd minute, OBU tied the game and sent it to overtime. In the second extra frame, the Tigers converted on a penalty kick to complete the comeback win. With the tough defeat, Upper Iowa drops to 1-4 on the season, while Ouachita Baptist improves to 4-1.
The first half featured 12 shot attempts, including eight from the Tigers. However, Upper Iowa's backline held strong led by junior goalkeeper
Connor Rortvedt, who finished the half with three saves. The Peacocks were unable to control the ball as well, and the first half came to a close with a scoreless tie.
In the second frame,
Blair Lyons found a way. The sophomore gathered control of the ball and sent it through the back of the net for his first goal of the season, and gave Upper Iowa a 1-0 advantage. However, UIU was only able to tally three total shot attempts in the second half, while OBU registered six. That would pay off for the Tigers late in the game. In the 82nd minute, Tinashe Chigede tied the game with his first goal of the year and sent the match to overtime late into the night.
Upper Iowa held the advantage in shot attempts (4-3) and corners earned (2-1) in the first overtime period, but both backlines were strong enough to keep the game tied. The second overtime did not take long. It only took one minute for Ouachita Baptist to earn a penalty kick, and Chigede made the most of the opportunity. His second goal of the game proved to be the game-winner.
OBU held the advantage in total shots (18-11) and a significant advantage in shots placed on goal (9-2). Rortvedt was solid in goal for the Peacocks, notching seven saves, but took the loss, dropping to 1-4 in the net.
The Peacocks will have a day off before heading back to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 17 when the face off with former MIAA opponent Southern Nazarene University. This will be the first ever meeting as non-conference opponents. UIU holds a 4-0 advantage all-time against the Crimson Storm. Kick-off is schedule for 12 p.m.
