THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK BASEBALL… After a two-week break from games, the Peacock baseball team will get back on the diamond in the sun and warmth of Clearwater, Fla. at the Winning Inning Invitational from Mar. 6-12. Upper Iowa is scheduled for 8 games in 7 days with one double headers on tap for their first day in the Sunshine State. The team will face Mansfield three times, while locking up with St. Leo twice and Cedarville, Missouri-St. Louis and Rockhurst once.
MEMPHIS MAGIC ACT... Upper Iowa, which is currently ranked seventh in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, or NCBWA, Central Region Poll, traveled to Memphis, Tenn. to face the Magicians of LeMoyne-Owen College to open the season on Feb. 20-21. The Peacocks swept the three game series with dominant victories by scores of 24-1, 15-0 and 21-6. UIU hit .436 as a team, including 12 doubles, five triples and a pair of home runs. The team was led by
Anthony Calton (.875), Luis Ravelo (.667),
Cody Booker (.600),
Jordan Kearns (.600) Zachary Cain (.571) and Jake Greco (.500). The Upper Iowa pitching staff combined to throw 23 innings and surrendered just two earned runs to the Magicians, while recording an 18/4 K-to-BB ratio. Sophomore pitcher
Brett Fanning earned NSIC Pitcher of the Week honors after making his return to the mound and winning game one of the weekend. He tossed six innings of one-run ball, while striking out six and allowing just three hits. Fanning started last season's opener, but his 2015 campaign ended with one out in the second inning when he suffered a season-ending injury on a ball back up the middle.
Tyus Adkins threw 5 innings of a seven-inning game allowing just two hits while shutting out LeMoyne-Owen to earn a win.
Mitch Moser was the final starter to post a win going four innings in a seven-inning game; the 2015 All-NSIC performer gave up two runs on three hits.
LAST YEAR IN CLEARWATER… The Peacocks went 7-3 at the Winning Inning Tournament last season. Upper Iowa defeated Mansfield in two of their three meetings (W, 5-4 & 12-11/L, 8-3) and Tiffin in two of their three contests (L, 11-4/W, 13-12 & 10-6). UIU also posted two wins over Ohio Valley (5-4 & 13-8) and Minnesota Crookston (9-8), but lost to Kentucky Wesleyan (10-3).
NSIC PRESEASON POLLS… Upper Iowa was predicted to finish twelfth out of fifteen teams in the NSIC this season. St. Cloud State University was the top pick in the poll marking the first time since joining the NSIC in 2008 the Huskies have been picked to win the league. St. Cloud State amassed 190 points after receiving 10 first place votes (coaches can't vote for their own team). Minnesota State, which was picked to win the league the past six seasons, was a close second with 187 points and five first place votes. A pair of Peacocks, outfielder

Brett Fanning, were named NSIC Players to Watch for the upcoming season. Greco, along with teammate
Mitch Moser, earned a spot on the All-NSIC team as well as a pair of All-Region squads.
UP NEXT... Upon returning to Fayette, Upper Iowa will host Bemidji State on Mar. 18 and Concordia-St. Paul on Mar. 19-20 to open their home schedule with a pair of NSIC teams in non-conference games.
NSIC TOURNAMENT... The 2016 NSIC Baseball Tournament will take the top eight teams in the final standings. The double elimination tournament takes place May 11-15 in St. Cloud, Minn.
