The #5 Peacock wrestling team improved to 3-0 on the season with a dominant 42-3 victory over the Beavers of Minot State University in Fayette on Saturday. Upper Iowa scored nine victories in the ten matches including six with bonus points. UIU recorded four wins by fall, a major decision and a technical fall on the afternoon.
UIU got off to a great start with first period pins at 125 and 133 pounds.
Maleek Williams (#7) and
Lincoln Monroe had a pair of takedowns recorded before their winning moves paid off with pins for the Peacocks. Leading 12-0, UIU pushed
Jordan Roths to the mat where he earned a hard fought 4-3 victory over Jered Sublet in the 141-pound match. Roths scored a takedown in the first period and rode two escapes in the final period to get away with the win.
Damian Penichet (#1) then posted a 2-0 victory in the 149-pound match with an escape in the second period and a final ride time point in the third period after he spent the entire two minutes on top.
Zak Benitz (#8) brought the team back from the first media timeout with a third pin in the first period by Upper Iowa. Benitz used an early takedown to gain the advantage. UIU took a 28-0 lead after the 165 pound match.
Colbey Vance, who had wrestled at 174 pounds all season, moved down a weight class to 165 where he posted an impressive 17-6 major decision. Vance scored a pair of takedowns and four reversals while racking up a four-point nearfall to boot. Minot State closed out the second set of bouts with their only victory at 174 pounds as Nick Geogean (#10) lost to Carlos Toledano by a 5-2 count.
After the second media timeout,
Dalton Westerlund (#6) earned a tightly-contested 5-3 battle over Keegan Berry. Westerlund scored his points on a takedown and reversal and also added a ride time point.
The dual closed quickly as the matches at 197 and heavyweight only lasted a combined 3:01.
Ryan Parmely (#5) earned a pin at the 1:48 mark of his match and
Logan Hopp dominated his match from the outset with a takedown and three separate four-point nearfalls on the way to a 15-0 technical fall victory.
The Peacocks will head to Indianapolis, Ind. this coming Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 17-18, for the 38
th Annual Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
