Dragons Heat Up in Third and Fourth Sets to Claim Victory

MSU Moorhead 3 - Upper Iowa 1. The Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead came out of the break and controlled the third and fourth sets to defeat the Peacock volleyball team on Friday night.

The Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead came out of the break and controlled the third and fourth sets to defeat the Peacock volleyball team on Friday night.  MSU Moorhead and Upper Iowa split a pair of two-point decisions prior to the intermission, but the home team took over the third and fourth sets thanks to the powerful right arm of Carly Masloski (27 kills) and Monica Vega (31 digs). With the loss, UIU falls to 9-13 overall and 3-10 in the NSIC, while MSUM 9-12 overall and 4-9 in the conference.

Upper Iowa claimed a four-point lead midway through the first set, 16-12, but the Dragons tied the match at 17-17 thanks to a 5-1 run.  MSUM continued to pressure and take a lead, 21-18, en route to a 25-23 win in the first frame. The home team edged their guests in hitting with 16 kills, while UIU had 15 in the opening set.

The Peacocks were able to force the Dragons into 10 attack errors in the second set, but still gave up 16 kills to MSUM. Upper Iowa trailed 19-16 late in the period, but an 8-2 run by the offense gave UIU set point and a three-point lead. The Dragons scored four straight points to take a 25-24 lead, but the Peacocks rebounded with the final three points to end the set and even the match at 1-1.

MSU Moorhead controlled the third set after jumping out to a 6-0 lead on the way to a 25-14 win. The fourth and final set did not start out well for the Peacocks either.  The Dragons took an early 4-0 lead and slowly extended their lead as the set progressed to five, 24-19. The Peacocks mounted one last rally that cut the gap to two, 24-22, but it was not enough to make up for the early hole.

Alisha VanderWoude led the offense with 11 kills and 5 blocks, while Haley Poula notched 8 kills while Haley Weepie and Anna Winter both registered 7. Malissa LeClaire handed out 22 assists and 19 digs, while Carlee Ketchum had 15 assists and 17 digs.  Ashley Larson led the back line with 23 digs.

The Peacocks will take on #13 Northern State University on Saturday.  The Peacocks and Wolves are set to line up against each other at 6 p.m.
