The Upper Iowa volleyball team pushed their winning streaks in matches to three and set to nine thanks to a total team effort against Bemidji State University on Saturday in Fayette. The Peacocks dominated the first set and used the momentum to take care of business in the second and third sets to come away with their third straight NSIC sweep. After the win, UIU sits at 9-7 overall and 3-4 in the NSIC, while BSU falls to 5-10 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
The Peacocks hit .257 for the match with 40 kills, while the Beavers posted just a .117 hitting percentage with 29 kills. UIU got better as the match moved forward with 12, 13 and 15 kills in each set.
Haley Poula led the offense for the second straight match with 13 kills and a hitting percentage of .545.
Kelsey Hinrichs added 10 kills and 7 digs, while
Malissa LeClaire paced the offense with 24 assists and 8 digs.
Ashley Larson was the leader on the backline as usual with 16 digs.
Upper Iowa jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the first set and quickly improved their advantage to 12 points thanks to an 11-3 run that included a pair of kills from the right hands of Poula and Hinrichs. The Peacocks finished the set off on Poula's fourth kill of the frame to win 25-13. UIU didn't let the foot off the pedal in the second set racing out to a 9-2 lead as Poula knocked three more balls to the ground. Bemidji State found some footing and began to climb back into the set to trail by just five, 20-15. Upper Iowa wrapped the set up and took a 2-0 lead by claiming five of the next seven points.
In the third set, UIU took an early 5-1 lead, but Bemidji State rallied to tie the set at 10-10. The two teams exchanged points and the score remained tied at 20-20 late in the set. The Peacocks scored the final five points with Larson on the service line highlighted by three kills from Hinrichs to put the match away with a 25-20 victory.
Upper Iowa will be on the road next weekend with a pair of Northern Sun Conference matches. UIU will line up against the #4 Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minn. on Friday at 7 p.m. and the Cougars of the University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Satrurday at 2 p.m.
