Dual Score Sheet The #8 Peacock wrestling team defended their home mat Friday in Fayette, 28-7, against the Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead. The dual was Upper Iowa's first action in Dorman Gym since Nov. 5 and marked the Northern Sun Conference home opener as well. UIU won eight of the ten matches including a pair of bonus point wins to improve to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in the NSIC. MSU Moorhead dropped to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference with the decision.
Lincoln Monroe got the night started on the right path with a 6-2 win by decision at 125 pounds. The West Union, Iowa native came out strong in front of the hometown crowd with a takedown in each of the first two periods to fuel his victory.
The Dragons answered at 133 pounds with their best. Blake Bosch, ranked #2 in the nation, took an early 4-1 lead over
Matt Paulus and then held on for a 7-4 win despite a strong third period from Paulus that included a takedown.
Jordan Roths scored a takedown early in the first period of the 141 pound match and rode the single score for the remainder of the match. Kristian Vazquez rode Roths out in the third period, but UIU's grappler had built a ride time advantage near three minutes before the end of the second period on the way to his 2-0 win.
UIU kept the momentum on their side with decisive victories at 149, 157 and 165 to push out to a 16-3 lead midway through the match.
Damian Penichet earned a 7-1 decision with three takedowns, while
Jordan Rinken avenged a pair of losses to Garrett Hoffner last year with an 8-2 win that included three first period takedowns.
Zak Benitz, ranked #6 nationally, capped off the trio of matches with an 8-0 major decision thanks to a takedown in each period of his 165-pound match.
Colbey Vance registered the biggest win of the night with a win by fall at 174 pounds. Vance used a pair of takedowns to take a 4-1 lead in the first period and then worked his position to force his opponent's shoulders to the mat on the edge of the circle with 28 seconds to go in the opening frame. The pin was his sixth of the season.
The Peacocks added two more wins in the final three matches while surrendering a major decision at heavyweight to set the final score at 28-7.
Dalton Westerlund (184) posted a takedown in the first period and a reversal in the second, but had to hold on for his win; the Albert Lea product scored a final takedown with seconds remaining to secure the 6-3 win.
Ryan Parmely took a 2-1 lead into the second period of his 197 pound match, but Cody Anderson got his second escape to tie the match at 2-2. The bout remained tied until the midpoint of the third period when Parmely scored on an escape and then held on for his 3-2 win.
MSU Moorhead's Nader Abdullatif earned an 18-4 major decision with 6 takedowns at heavyweight to close out the dual and pick up the Dragons' second win of the night.
Upper Iowa recorded an 18-10 advantage in takedowns on the night.
The Peacocks will travel to Northern State University for a dual next Friday night, Jan. 22, in Aberdeen, S.D. at 7 p.m. UIU returns home for a pair of duals on Jan. 29-30 against Southwest Minnesota State University and Minnesota State University, Mankato.
