Pair of Poor Innings Punish the Peacocks

Game 1: William Jewell 7, Upper Iowa 3; Game 2: William Jewell 5, Upper Iowa 3 - The Peacocks surrender six runs in the bottom of the fifth in the loss in game one, followed by allowing all five runs in the bottom of the sixth of game two.

The Peacocks were done in on Sunday by a pair of bad innings, one in each game, leading to two losses to the Cardinals of William Jewell. In game one, the teams were tied after the top of the fifth, but the Cardinals rallied with six runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a commanding 7-1 lead, en route to a 7-3 victory. Game two was tied 0-0 after the top of the sixth, only to have William Jewell bounce back with five runs in the bottom of the sixth and win 5-3. With the losses, Upper Iowa fell to 3-8 on the season. The Cardinals improved to 5-1.

Game one started slow, but Jacqueline Flood finally broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third with her team-leading 11th RBI, bringing in Katie Mnichowicz. The Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with an unearned run, then rallied with four two-out hits in the bottom of the fifth, scoring six runs.

Mnichowicz hit her first home run of the year with two outs in the top of the seventh innings, scoring Mara Jones, but Flood grounded out in the next at-bat to end the game.

Brooke Redmond (2-4) took the complete game loss, throwing six innings and allowing 10 hits and five earned runs. She struck out two and walked none.

The Cardinals big inning in game two came an inning later, breaking a 0-0 game wide open with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Peacocks looked like they may have enough to match William Jewell in the top of the seventh, as Mnichowicz opened the inning with a double, followed by a Flood single and then an Erica Kirgan home run, her first of 2015, to pull UIU within two, 5-3. After a pitching change, the Peacocks went three-up, three-down to end the game.

Flood (1-3) took the loss in the second game, throwing six innings, allowing 11 hits and five runs. She struck out one and walked one.

Mnichowicz led UIU with three hits in four at-bats and drew three walks. Flood and Whitney Williams picked up a pair of hits each on the day.

The Peacocks will head to Topeka, Kan., for a doubleheader tomorrow, Monday, Mar. 9, against Washburn University. The games will be at 2 and 4 p.m. Live stats are available for the game here.
