Tonight in Peacock Wrestling… The Peacocks will open their home slate for the 2015-16 campaign on Thursday night in Fayette. Upper Iowa is hosting the Second Annual Mike Olson Duals in honor of their former coach and UIU Athletics Hall of Famer. Three duals will take place in Dorman Gym with the night opening at 5 p.m. with a battle between Waldorf College and Truman State University. Upper Iowa will line up with the Warriors at 6:30 p.m. and then take on the Bulldogs in the nightcap at 8 p.m.
Remembering Coach Olson... Former Upper Iowa Head Wrestling Coach Mike Olson, a 2007 inductee into the Upper Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame, passed away on July 12, 2014, in Monmouth, Ill., after a long battle with cancer. He was 76 years old. He was a professor and coach at Upper Iowa University from 1966 to 1971. Olson had an outstanding five years as head wrestling coach leading the Peacocks' dominant team to four consecutive Iowa Conference titles in 1968, 1969, 1970 and 1971. His wrestling team qualified each year for the NAIA National Tournament. The 1971 team won the District 15 Championship that finished fourth in the nation and finished fifth at the 1969 National NAIA tournament. The 1968 team participated in the NCAA Division II tournament finishing eighth (tied with UNI). Olson was named the Iowa Conference Coach of the Year four times while at Upper Iowa with a total of 21 conference or district honors. While at Upper Iowa he coached four national champions including Steve Exline (twice), Dave Sanger, and Craig Campbell.
27 Wins & 17 Pins... The Peacock wrestling team opened their 2015-16 season last Sunday in Mason City, Iowa at the Kaye Young Open hosted by NIACC. Upper Iowa wrestled very well on the day with 15 attached wrestlers at the event. In three of the nine brackets that the Peacocks competed in, a pair of Upper Iowa wrestlers met in the championship match. Rather than battle in the final round, Head Coach
Heath Grimm and his staff had each wrestler tied for second place with the six wrestlers posting a perfect record on the day. The top finishers for UIU came at 125 pounds with
Garrett Wangsness (2-0) and
Maleek Williams (3-0 w/ a fall and major decision), 149 pounds with
Alex Mitchell and Damien Penichet, who both recorded 2-0 records with falls in each of their matches, and 165 pounds with
Zak Benitz (1-0 w/ a major decision) and
Douglas Perrin (2-0 w/ a fall).
Dakota Wangsness (133) and
Dalton Westerlund (174) both reached the championship match, but each lost their final bout to place second in their respective weight classes. Wangsness went 2-1 with a pair of falls, while Westerlund also went 2-1 with a win by fall.
Cody Nelson (157) and
Colbey Vance (174) both placed third with 2-1 records; Nelson scored a pair of wins by fall, while Vance earned a fall and a major decision. In total, the Peacocks combined for a record of 27-14 on the day with 20 bonus-point wins including 17 falls and 3 major decisions.
